Reagan vs Trump - Who's Economy Was Better?
Vanity ^ | 11/16/22 | LRoggy

I’m getting so tired of the Burleigh’s here ignoring history, so here’s the actual economic statistics of the two Presidents.

Reagan came to office in January 1981, with the 30-year mortgage around 13.15%, while Trump took office in January 2017 with the mortgage rate at 4.08%. In Reagan’s day, the Federal Reserve did not pump ludicrous amounts of money into the economy with asset purchases; in fact, the opposite was true. The Fed was tightening so tightly that Reagan lost the midterms badly because of it. Reagan had to endure two years of Volcker’s policies to fight inflation, so let’s pick his numbers up in 1983, while we’ll use Trump’s first three years, since Covid skews the results, no matter who was in the Oval Office.

At year-end 1980, Reagan faced this as he took office:

Year Real GDP Inflation Unemployment

1980 <0.3>% 12.5% 7.2%

Then, when Volcker finally relented, we had this:

Year Real GDP Inflation Unemployment

1983 4.6% 3.8% 10.8%

1984 7.2% 3.9% 7.3%

1985 4.2% 3.8% 7.0%

1986 3.5% 1.1% 6.6%

1987 3.5% 4.4% 7.7%

1988 4.2% 4.4% 5.3%

Trump comes into office after this 2016 performance:

Year Real GDP Inflation Unemployment

2016 1.7% 2.1% 4.7%

For the 3 pre-Covid years, the numbers are as follows:

Year Real GDP Inflation Unemployment

2017 2.3% 2.1% 4.1%

2018 2.9% 1.9% 3.9%

2019 2.3% 2.3% 3.6%

Trump had a Republican Congress when he took office, Reagan NEVER HAD a Republican House. When I went to work in April 1982, the stock market, which had not set an all-time high for SIXTEEN YEARS, was around 700. When Reagan left office, it was nearly 400% higher.

Anyone who thinks Trump’s claims of his having the ‘best economy ever’, is ignorant of what Reagan accomplished.

“There were far more Dems than Repubs in 1980, the ratio is closer today, so that’s just false.

Reagan converted Dems just like Trump did. Reagan’s landslide is an achievement you can’t sneer at.

Trump angered Independents, Reagan was beloved when he left office.”

I didn’t say that Reagan’s landslide wasn’t great. When I said demographics, I meant that there were more minorities in the country when Trump ran. Trump turned so many counties that had gone for Obama to the Republican side. He also gained two Senate seats in the 2018 Midterms.

Great, glad you liked Reagan, I liked him as well.

I just don’t know what a Trump vs Reagan debate is going to do for us, moving forward.

Thanks, when I started at Drexel Burnham in April 1982, the market was well below where he started due to Volcker’s tight money. That was my reference point in my memory. I believe it was below 800 on the Dow. Before the crash in ‘87 we were over 2,700.

I’d take either of them over ANY Democrat.

Real GDP was at an all-time high under Trump.
Unemployment and inflation were at decadal lows under Trump.

I lived (as an adult) under both. I think the economy WAS BETTER in 2019 than in ANY of Reagan’s years. So, Trump’s statement was correct.

But that doesn’t mean Trump was better at economics. Trump’s economy was still benefiting from things Reagan did… like indexing taxes to inflation, 401ks, deregulation, etc.

Again … I like both when it comes to economic policy. Although Trump was not as good at trying to control spending, neither was all that great by this one measure.

My numbers ARE real GDP, there’s no way you can make that statement. Reagan’s starting point was ridiculous to deal with and Trump never had to deal with a tightening Fed. He had them loose the entire time.

Too late! The GOP didn’t campaign these points.

Absolutely right. Our entire campaign was ‘We’re not Democrats’

And 2020 was just more of the same. We got lazy and didn’t pay attention to the nuts and bolts of campaigning and made that mistake AGAIN this year.

Whoever is the nominee in 2024 better understand how to handle election logistics.

I’m saying it is impossible to make such precise comparisons that you are trying to sell and I don’t know why you would do it.

If you have something to say about Trump, then say it, don’t start a war against the memory of Reagan to create a Reagan versus Trump battle.

You obviously have a candidate you are trying to promote, do it directly, and don’t sneak around it by setting people on digging up arguments against Reagan.

Reagan would not like what you are doing.

Your numbers are “% GDP Increase”.... not “Total GDP”

The Fed was lowering the balance sheet early in Trump’s term. That’s nothing like raising interest rates, but... it’s not the kind of money-printing assistance Obama had throughout all of his term.

Face it, man. The Economy was ROUGH under Reagan for much of his term. Unemployment was awful. I was laid off twice in those years.

It wasn’t Reagan’s doing. He started from a FAR worse place. You could make a strong case that Reagan IMPROVED the economy more. But, not that the economy was “better” under Reagan. Not even close.

2019, economy-wise, was as good as I’ve seen it in my lifetime.

Good luck running Reagan in the 2024 primaries, you’ll need it.

Reagan would probably STILL do better in the General election.

If Trump is our nominee, I predict turnout will be >120%

Reagan was a long long time ago. Time to move on.

People under 55 or so barely know who he was.

He was a great President. But time to move on.

You lost the argument with your post #33. This is pointless except to sow dissension in the ranks and hurt morale.
I loved President Reagan and I love President Trump.
I liked the U.S. being energy independent with President Trump but President Reagan didn’t have the benefit of fracking technology.
Nevermind that, the real question is Muhammed Ali or Rocky Marciano.
FRegards.

Loved Reagan but he never told us about the fake news and never really fought them. Reagan gave the pharmaceutical companies a pass when they passed the law that said they’re not responsible and can’t be sued. Donald Trump had the lowest gas prices in the history when you add an inflation. Lowes unemployment ever. Reagan never had everone against him. Reagan nice guy. Trump got more done.

Reagan didn’t fight the media because he was too busy changing the world, freeing 100s of millions of people, and winning 49 states in his next election, Reagan overcame the media.

Reagan’s entire life was that of a man with a plan to make America and the world a better place, his Christian faith is revealed in his life and he always thought of others.

Reagan is a rare famous person in that, the deeper you dig into his life, the more you put the man under a microscope, the more he grows, which is the opposite of most famous people.

Blast from the past: "President Reagan today signed into law a farm bill that is likely to boost federal subsidy spending "

Reagan was a simpering little faggont compared to Grover Cleveland. All the pedophiles hate Trump.
