Italian authorities are claiming Bay’s film crew killed a homing pigeon with a dolly on the set of his 2019 Netflix movie, “6 Underground,” in Rome. An unnamed crew member purportedly snapped a photo and reported it to authorities.

Bay has attempted to clear his name multiple times.

According to EU law, pigeons are protected under the “Bird Directive” which makes it illegal to kill, capture, or harm wild birds.

If you’re going to have to pay a heavy fine or go to prison for killing a bird, you should at least have gotten some pleasure out of it.

Why? They are useless birds that provide nothing to the world but guano. Even birds of pray won't eat them because they taste like garbage.

If not for cohabitating with humans and eating our trash their population 1/100 of what it is now.

There's a guy who will never work on another set again.

?????? There is some potential responsibility, but the story certainly does nothing to support such a case.

Authorities reportedly claim a protected homing pigeon was killed during the 2018 production of “6 Underground.” Allegedly, the bird was killed by a dolly during a take on set in Rome, and an unnamed crew member allegedly snapped a photo and reported it to the police, a source said.

I haven't seen the movie. Is there a scene involving pigeons in which the crew might have been careless and done something that deliberately created a risk to the bird? If a production brings animals into a scene, it has a responsibility to treat them humanely and not put them at risk in a shoot.

(I imagine this does not apply to fish, which are hooked by fisherman or hauled up in nets from time to time in movies. I don't know about game animals. Are real birds ever shot in the movies? I would have no objections if the bird, a game animal, was properly retrieved, dressed and served. That's legitimate treatment of game animals.)

Assuming the pigeon wasn't brought onset and deliberately released by the crew for the shoot, absent gratuitous indifference and deliberate cruelty I myself wouldn't lose any sleep over the accidental killing of a pigeon, but the animal rights people wouldn't see it that way. And before I brush it off entirely, I would note that back in the bad old days, there were many, many examples of sheer indifference to animal suffering and deaths on the part of directors and movie production crews. The industry, at least in the U.S., cracked down on that sort of thing decades ago. It's hard to believe Michael Bay or anyone on a modern set would not take reasonable care in handling animals involved in the shoot. They might abuse their actors, but they would take care of the animals. The bad old days of riding horses to death are long gone.

That said, the story makes it sound like a completely accidental killing of a random stray bird. The obvious possibility would be that a large dolly, perhaps motorized, was tracking a shot and ran over a bird, which had presumably ignored the crew members who would have cleared the area for the shot and would be around the perimeter to keep anyone from carelessly walking through the scene. Pigeons, however, are known to jaywalk. It's hard to believe that anyone would try to make a case out of that, but when it comes to bottom feeding lawyers and activist groups runnng a shakedown racket, who knows?

So my first question is whether the crew brought the bird into the scene, in which case it has some responsibility, or whether the pigeon was freelancing.

Is it illegal to eat “pigeon” in Italy? If so, the guy is innocent. Just trying to augment his meager Lira salary.

A pigeon in Rome? Those filthy rat birds are every where. They are an invasive pest. Meanwhile. People eat billions of chickens a day and we are suppose to care about a filthy rat bird? God help us.

I seem to remember Dave Winfield, then with the Yankees, having an arrest warrant issued to him for killing a pigeon with a throw from center field while playing in Toronto against the Blue Jays.
