And probably to Jakob Fugger as well. The Catholic Fuggers aren’t as well known but they may have been the largest banking family in Europe.
IIRC the argument against lending came from Artistotle, who argued that “money is sterile” and cannot increase, which he believed it had to do in order for interest payments to work.
Catholic scholastics of the Middle Ages were learned in the Greek philosophers and their ideas about banking and the nature of the universe more often derived from the ancient Greeks rather than from the Bible.
But they cheated. They figured out that a “line of credit” with a “service fee” isn’t a “loan” with “interest”. A distinction without a difference to the vast majority of us, but when it’s the Catholic Church wanting to borrow money it’s enough.
Regarding the entire IQ argument, how many people in the world have actually ever taken an IQ test? Unless everyone has, comparisons aren't going to be very helpful. Further, if you look at highest average IQ per country, Israel generally doesn't make the top 10. Does that mean anything, or prove that Jews aren't ‘the smartest’? No, it doesn't. It's irrelevant, just like all these blanket proclamations.
With all due respect, if it's important for you to think that certain groups of humans are smarter than others, that's obviously your prerogative and is perfectly fine with me. I personally think that despite all the ‘smart people’ in the world we seem to be going to hell in a handbasket, and human intellect doesn't seem to be helping.

That reminds me of something mentioned in one of FF Bruce’s books.
In pre-Christian times one of the largest Jewish settlements was in Alexandria Egypt, which had been ruled by the Greek Ptolemys until they were conquered by the Romans.
The remaining Greeks resented being under Roman rule but there wasn’t much of anything they could do about it but nurse a grudge.
Alexandrian Jews, in contrast to the Greeks, got along just fine with the Roman ruling class, and this tended to stick in the craw of the grudge-nursing Greek populace. At some point one of the Roman emperors died, leaving a temporary vaccuum of power, so the Greeks seized the opportunity to pound on their Jewish neighbors for the crime of sucking up to the hated Romans.

The Vatican was among those who borrowed from the Fuggers knowing that they would be paying interest. They didn’t accuse the Fuggers of “cheating”.
Odd. I seem to recall that the Bible does not speak well of charging interest.
I’d venture politicians have leveraged the sin of envy against many groups & institutions beyond just Jews.
I could list a few - The GOP, “Big Oil”, the church, the nuclear family, etc. And a myriad of racism/sexism tropes.

The reason Jews lived in European cities is that in most European countries, until modern times, Jews were forbidden from owning agricultural land, and the only occupations available to them were in the cities.
Like Jews or not you have to agree they are not whiners, nor do they complain about their past history of persecution.
Some other ethnicities/races who in truth have been coddled in ways like no others, are always complaining and even asking to compensated, when in fact they have been held to much lower standards.
In a conversation with an elderly Jewish woman, I mentioned the Jews are God’s chosen people. She replied , “Who wants that? Look what that has brought on us Jews!”

Typically, people who make more money are more likely to be Republicans. That isn’t true for Jews. Jews who make more money are more likely to be Democrats.
