Though, let me say, the humanities departments may have been hijacked by especially subversive elements recently but there has been a disease festering in Western civilization in this general area of thinking for several centuries now, long before the commies crept in with their agenda. Basically, we’ve had a crisis of confidence in the foundational values of our civilization ever since the enlightenment. Professors of the humanities, who we might expect to be the ones to sound the alarm about that and be most interested in averting the crisis, have so far failed to find any solution, and arguably, have only worsened the situation with their inaction.
The dirty secret of the current college English department: It is very difficult to get English majors and even young faculty to read long texts. So lots of “close reading” of a few pages of this, a few pages of that.
Really pathetic all around. But lots of corporate employers are happy to find merely semi-literate hires at this point, so an English degree gives them hope of at least that.
