Commentary: Is Loneliness Really as Damaging to Your Health as Smoking 15 Cigarettes a Day?

Vivek Murthy, the US surgeon general, recently warned that “being socially disconnected” has a similar effect on mortality as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. This statement was widely reported in the media, including in the Washington Post, the Times and the Daily Mail. But where does this “15 cigarettes a day” figure come from?

Dr Murthy is referring to a study published in 2010 that explored social relationships and mortality rates. The researchers combined the data from 148 studies on the topic, in what is known as a “meta-analysis”, to arrive at a more robust statistical answer to their questions.

The meta-analysis contained data on 300,000 participants who were studied for an average of seven and a half years. The researchers explored the extent to which social relationships can influence the risk of premature death, the aspects of social relationships that are most likely to predict an early death, and any factors that mitigate the risk.

Loneliness probably affects social type people.

If one prefers to be a hermit, one never feels "lonely".

It probably is, but that just proves the relatively unserious risk of smoking. It’s always been more nuisance than a crucial health risk

I guess the real question to ask is,” which is more damaging to your health, 15 cigarettes a day or SOCIAL MEDIA?”

We know cigarettes affect your lungs, but social media ROTS YOUR MIND!!!!!

It is a sad, slow motion death to watch someone suffocate from COPD.

‘If one prefers to be a hermit, one never feels “lonely”

very true; for some, myself included, someone else’s loneliness is our normal...

I’ve often wondered how vacant a person’s self worth is if they need others in order to produce daily stimulation...

So if I have a whole bunch of friends and smoke 15 cigarettes a day does that negate the effect of smoking?

The second article today from the lying media about “loneliness”.
...what’s the propaganda narrative going on?

The benefits of fifteen minute cites?

Politics has invaded everything in America, so trust nothing that comes from the government.

This sounds like it might be discouraging people from thinking about being independent by equating it with "loneliness."

Or perhaps they're are fanning the flames of victimhood as it pertains to people who are already desperately lonely.

For example: "Do you feel lonely? Well, do your best to fit in at school (by being a conformist) because loneliness can kill you."

I’ve never understood loneliness as a thing. You’ve e got a brain in your head? Think. Go do something. Go help someone out.

Maybe in people who’ve been used to being out among many all their life bouncing off others continually and then grown old and stuck in some room somewhere.

When was the last time you cared about anything a US Surgeon General said?

If my memory is correct we had a Surgeon General who gave a video demonstration of how to cut up a t-shirt to make a mask that would keep you from getting covid. Need I say more?
