After Gettysburg the victory of the north was inevitable, black troops or not. Without some of the mid to late 1864 victories like Atlanta, Lincoln and the Republicans could have lost the election. Lincoln was trying to find a way to win the war before McClellan was sworn in in March 1865 if the Democrats had won.
