Hidden Assault on Heart: COVID-19 Infects Coronary Arteries and Increases Plaque Inflammation

SARS-CoV-2 infection can inflame heart arteries, elevating heart attack and stroke risks. This study, based on older individuals, provides insights into increased cardiovascular risks among COVID-19 patients.

NIH-funded research sheds light on link between COVID-19 infection and increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can directly infect the arteries of the heart and cause the fatty plaque inside arteries to become highly inflamed, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health. The findings, published in the journal Nature Cardiovascular Research, may help explain why certain people who get COVID-19 have a greater chance of developing cardiovascular disease, or if they already have it, develop more heart-related complications.

In the study, researchers focused on older people with fatty buildup, known as atherosclerotic plaque, who died from COVID-19. However, because the researchers found the virus infects and replicates in the arteries no matter the levels of plaque, the findings could have broader implications for anybody who gets COVID-19.

“Since the early days of the pandemic, we have known that people who had COVID-19 have an increased risk for cardiovascular disease or stroke up to one year after infection,” said Michelle Olive, Ph.D., acting associate director of the Basic and Early Translational Research Program at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH. “We believe we have uncovered one of the reasons why.”

Understanding the Impact on Arterial Cells

Though previous studies have shown that SARS-CoV-2 can directly infect tissues such as the brain and lungs, less was known about its effect on the coronary arteries. Researchers knew that after the virus reaches the cells, the body’s immune system sends in white blood cells known as macrophages to help clear the virus. In the arteries, macrophages also help remove cholesterol, and when they become overloaded with cholesterol, they morph into a specialized type of cell called foam cells.

The researchers thought that if SARS-CoV-2 could directly infect arterial cells, the macrophages that normally are turned loose might increase inflammation in the existing plaque, explained Chiara Giannarelli, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor in the departments of medicine and pathology at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine and senior author on the study. To test their theory, Giannarelli and her team took tissue from the coronary arteries and plaque of people who had died from COVID-19 and confirmed the virus was in those tissues. Then they took arterial and plaque cells – including macrophages and foam cells – from healthy patients and infected them with SARS-CoV-2 in a lab dish. They found that the virus had also infected those cells and tissues.

Further Findings and Implications

Additionally, the researchers found that when they compared the infection rates of SARS-CoV-2, they showed that the virus infects macrophages at a higher rate than other arterial cells. Cholesterol-laden foam cells were the most susceptible to infection and unable to readily clear the virus. This suggested that foam cells might act as a reservoir of SARS-CoV-2 in the atherosclerotic plaque. Having more build-up of plaque, and thus a greater number of foam cells, could increase the severity or persistence of COVID-19.

The researchers then turned their attention to the inflammation they predicted might occur in the plaque after infecting it with the virus. They quickly documented the release of molecules, known as cytokines, that are known to increase inflammation and promote the formation of even more plaque. The cytokines were released by infected macrophages and foam cells. The researchers said this may help explain why people who have underlying plaque buildup and then get COVID-19 may have cardiovascular complications long after getting the infection.

“This study is incredibly important as it adds to the larger body of work to better understand COVID-19,” said Olive. “This is just one more study that demonstrates how the virus both infects and causes inflammation in many cells and tissues throughout the body. Ultimately, this is information that will inform future research on both acute and Long COVID.”

Though the findings conclusively show that SARS-CoV-2 can infect and replicate in the macrophages of plaques and arterial cells, they are only relevant to the original strains of SARS-CoV-2 that circulated in New York City between May 2020 and May 2021. The study was conducted in a small cohort of older individuals, all of whom had atherosclerosis and other medical conditions; therefore, the results cannot be generalized to younger, healthy individuals.

So I quickly scanned the article and it does not even mention how many of the “lab rats” (meaning human guinea pigs) were vaccinated. Given the funding source, I would be more inclined to believe this is simply a cover-up for the intended consequences of the clot shot. A deflection if you will.

Trying to cover up vaccination side effects.

They were determined to inject-rape everyone on the planet to then blame the bio-weapon virus instead of the Jim Jones Jab.

A long-time friend called today. They got all the jabs, boosters too I presume. And they've both had Covid. They never stopped to think that the shots could have been related to the husband suddenly developing high blood pressure, when he'd never been diagnosed with it before, along with a blockage that required intrusive surgery, in the months after they got the original shots. I never brought it up because the wife would have poo-pooed it.

She knows I never got the shots, but today she asked me if I was getting the new booster. I told her no, I won't get any shots. She replied: "Not even with the new variant?" I didn't have the heart to tell her that all the variants have likely been caused by the shots all this time. Then she asked me about the flu shot, and I told her no, that I stopped getting flu shots, because I don't trust the manufacturers, or the people at the pharmacy who dispense them.

I reminded her that I'd already tested positive twice for Covid last year, and had no symptoms of any kind with it. In fact, the second time I tested positive last November, I needed a Covid test prior to cataract surgery. I gave myself a home test that Tuesday morning, that I had picked up from the pharmacy that same morning, and it was negative. When the surgery center called me shortly after, I told them I'd done a rapid test at home, and that it was negative, but they told me they wouldn't accept it unless I'd had the shots. More stupidity. So I had to run out to their lab to have another swab test done on me, which was positive early that evening. My surgery was cancelled until the first of this year. And I managed to test negative on both occasions, prior to each surgery.

I've done rapid swab tests at home before, and had completed self-administered nasal swab tests when I visited friends in hospitals and rehab centers, and they were all negative. I never had much faith in the swab tests from the beginning, because they weren't consistent in their test results. The son of the friend I spoke to today, had three Covid tests before he tested positive for it. Elon Musk took three tests, and got different results on at least two of them. I also remember reading about Nick Cordero, a broadway dancer who was admitted to the hospital with what they said were pneumonia symptoms in March of 2020. He tested negative for Covid on at least 3 occasions in the hospital. The doctors decided though that he had Covid. He was put on a ventilator. Then, about two weeks later he had his right leg amputated because doctors said he was suffering from Covid complications. He died in July 2020 at 41 years of age. His death was attributed to Covid.

Those are some of the reasons why I never trusted the Covid tests, and why, since they didn't even have an accurate test to detect Covid, I was never going to get their shots.

Same for my brother. I recently learned he developd high BP soon after getting the shot. Doesn’t see a connection. Nothing else has changed - he’s very fit and active. He almost never went to doctors his whole life, now has to go all the time. Same with his wife. She thinks they are worthless but they got them to be able to see their grandkids. They did not look good at all when I saw them recently.

Her daughter got three shots and has had Covid 4 times now, sick as a dog. She gets sick with everything else now too.

I'm sorry to hear of your family's post-shot health issues. I can't imagine why anyone who has tested positive for Covid four times, would even bother getting any more shots.

I've had underlying health issues since I was in my mid-30's, and more have been added since then, but I managed to outlive everyone else in my family. I turned 76 this August. The last sibling died at 73. The other siblings died at 69 and 51. My parents died at 72 and 69. They all smoked. I never did. Three of them died of lung cancer.

It is my opinion that the swab tests are contaminated. I have been lucky throughout this insanity that I have not had to seek medical care. I also believe that all the current injections are mRNA-derived so I am refusing all shots.

I figured if you couldn't trust the swab tests to give an accurate result, why would I take an untested shot they were shoving down our throats. I glad you agree about the swab tests.

Last year my endocrinologist/family doctor changed three of my medications within a short period, which caused horrible side effects. My blood work was crazy. My blood glucose was bizarre. I knew it was the new drug combo, so I stopped taking them, but I still ended up in the emergency room one morning, because my heart was racing like crazy. I'd never had that before in my life. The ER doctor told me to stop taking them, and I told her I already had. She said "good." It took me at least 8 weeks to get back to normal. Fortunately my endocrinologist/family doctor retired last December, so I didn't have to dump him. I have a new endocrinologist, and a new family doctor, and my health has been good. Stay well. Stay well.
