Britain’s AstraZeneca has agreed to pay $425 million to settle about 11,000 lawsuits in the United States that claimed its heartburn drugs Nexium and Prilosec caused chronic kidney disease.

AstraZeneca did not admit wrongdoing under the settlement, part of broader litigation against makers of a class of heartburn drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

“Today’s settlements are a significant victory for the thousands of patients who suffered kidney injuries as a result of using” the drugs, the plaintiffs’ attorney Chris Seeger said in a statement. A single lawsuit is still scheduled to go to trial in April in Louisiana, according to AstraZeneca.

Pepcid, 40mg every night is far safer than proton pump inhibitors, which were originally to be used no longer than 6 weeks. For a reason. But like Tylenol, which rheumatologists were prescribing in massive amounts to their patients, as a “safer” alternative to aspirin and nsaids, until it was killing them by destroying their livers, proton pump inhibitors have found to be dangerous, long-term.

I have GERD and the available OTC PPIs lose effectivness after a few rounds anyway. The one that didn’t is perscription only and insurane won’t cover it. So it is pepsid now for me anyway.

Totally, totally agree. PPIs are for short term use only but the gastroenterologists will not tell you that. It is a cash cow and a despicable drug.

Same. I was on my way to esophageal cancer and my nexium has allowed me to exist without having life altering surgery for the past several years.

Baking soda is a type of salt. Careful if you are on salt restrictions. Consider a keto diet, my acid reflux goes away on keto...the problem is that I really like carbs.

Most people probably need MORE stomach acid...but stupid docs do not test...they just push drugs. HCL would solve lots of people’s stomach problems.

I took exactly one to those once. I thought I was going to die in more way than one. Then go and look at the official list of side effects. Then they effectively banned a harmless Ranitidine that works great. Why? Because it has the same amount of a so called cancer causer as a slice of bacon.

I had Pepcid prescribed in the past and was allergic to it. So they prescribed Nexium and it was awesome. After a month or two my insurance wouldn’t cover it.
