Two Fatalities in Attack with Bear Spray Used
AmmoLand ^ | October 6, 2023 | Dean Weingarten

Early reports are two dedicated hikers and campers, Doug Inglis and Jenny Gusse, his wife, and their dog, have been killed by a grizzly bear in a remote part of Banff National Park in Canada. At least one empty can of bear spray was found at the scene. From Calgary Herald.com:

From what he was told by Parks Canada officials, it appears the attack began when the couple were in their tent, where they would have typically been poring over e-readers with Tris by their side, Colin said.

“Their tent was crushed and their e-readers were open, they were both discovered in their stocking feet,” he said.

It also appeared one of both of them might have left their tent and fought the bear to the end, he added.

“One can of bear spray had been fully discharged but this bear was not to be deterred,” Colin said.

“It’s possible one was on the outside trying to fend off the bear while the other was in the tent sending the message.”

He was also told the response team encountered the same grizzly believed to be responsible for the deadly attack, and were forced to shoot it.

“In their words, the bear was intent on killing them.”

Another source, outsideonline.com reports two empty cans of bear spray were at the scene:

Colin Inglis told the CBC that the couple had messaged him throughout the trip via a Garmin inReach. On the evening of the attack, he received a message saying the two were setting up camp. But later that evening, Colin Inglis received an SOS message from the two. “The message said ‘Bear attack bad,’” he told the CBC.

Colin Inglis said rescuers found two empty canisters of bear spray in the couple’s campsite.

If you don’t hit the bear in the right place guns don’t work either.

Guns work very well, if you actually fire the gun.

Most of the stats about guns "not working" are when the gun is not fired.

Access problems are about the same for bear spray and handguns, or rifles and shotguns if they are carried in the hands.

I like the idea of one person armed with spray and the other with a sidearm.

“If you don’t hit the bear in the right place guns don’t work either.”

True...I’ve heard lots of stories of bullets hitting a grizzly skull at a shallow angle and ricocheting off. I hear that angers the bear.

I hear shot placement with a rifle or pistol gets a bit tough when a bear is charging you and is 15 feet away. You get one chance.

Did you get a stripped lower or complete lower?
Not sure what CA law is, but you should be able to have most of the parts shipped directly to your door.

Here is a good summary of compatible parts.

One empty can of pepper spray and one empty can of salt.
The bear was thankful for the spices on his food.

Who’s the study by Tom Smith and STEPHEN HERRERO,

Is so poorly done and full of selection bias that you can not trust it.

Even they say that when it comes to predatory bears it doesn’t work.

Frist off one has to have a standard of what is an conflict what is an attack.

Smith and HERRERO have at least two different ones. One for spray, one for firearms.

If one uses Smith’s and Herrero’s standard for spray.

I have discouraged and stopped bears bad behavior a dozen or more times.

Hard to remember all of them in over 50 years of dealing with bears.

See I live in prime black bear country dealing with them several times a year isn’t uncommon.

I have traveled , back packed, camped, fished, hunted. Trapped and done many outdoor activates. In both black and grizzly habited a lot.

Stripped. Thanks for the link! I’m not sure if I can get parts shipped here. We have to pass a background check just to purchase ammo.

The blondie black bear quit coming around our place. Wasn’t huge, but I carried my 1955 Smith pre-27 with a 3.5” barrel, stoked with 158 grain Keith bullets.

My favorite FR bear story is about Freeper Kanawa. He stabbed an attacking black bear to death with a Buck fixed blade hunting knife.

So would it be OK with you if all the lions in Africa were eradicated? The only good lion is a dead lion.

Thanks, good to know. I’m learning a lot about rifles. I really like the .338 Lapua magnum, its just my shoulder I’m worried about from the recoil.

It’s crazy here. Last week I started prepping my house to sell. I haven’t decided where to move yet. I was in Nevada last week and the gun laws there are great, but I don’t want to live in the desert.

Actually firearms work very well.

Read this .

https://www.ammoland.com/2023/06/handgun-defenses-against-bears-170-documented-incidents-98-effective/

Then this.

https://www.ammoland.com/2023/08/how-was-the-98-success-number-for-bear-spray-computed/

Then if you think your not good enough with a firearm buy more ammo and get some professional training
