The 54 Year Old Single Malt Whisky Is Highland Park's Oldest and Rarest Release
Channel News Asia ^

There are only 225 bottles of the single malt Scotch whisky worldwide, of which only six are available in Singapore.

The Orkney Islands, located at the northernmost tip of Scotland, is a unique archipelago defined by wild beauty and a Viking history dating back to the 8th century. Here, heather peat blankets moorland, the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean crash onto rugged cliffs, and salt-laden sea winds sweep through the cluster of 70 islands of which only 20 are inhabited. Orkney has only two distilleries, one of which is Highland Park and it has been producing award-winning elixirs since 1798.

For over 220 years, the distillery, one of the oldest working ones in Scotland, has smoked their local barley by hand over 4,000-year-old peat hand-cut from the nearby Hobbister Moor. The lashing winds may have led to treeless terrains in the remote islands but it has given rise to heather-rich peat that burns slowly in Highland Park’s ancient kilns to create a complex floral aroma that is infused into the malting barley. The whisky is then matured in sherry seasoned oak casks, a process that is aided by a temperate climate of mild winters and summers. The result? Incredibly characterful whiskies that are intensely balanced with a smoky sweetness and laden with a harmony of myriad flavours. Bottles like the 15 Year Old Viking Heart, 25 Year Old and 30 Year Old make perfect pairings with dishes from seafood to grilled meats and chocolate desserts. The 18 Year Old Viking Pride is particularly smooth and sophisticated, living up to its accolades of “Best Spirit in the World” by the Spirit Journal and a Gold and Ultimate Recommendation (with a score of 96) in the 2021 International Spirits Challenge.

“Well after reading the article and thinking wow I would love some good Islay scotch I find they don’t ship to the us”

Hard to find whisky.
htfw.com

They even have an Amazon store. Buy in US dollars and they do the currency conversion that night. Ships to the US at very reasonable prices and quickly. I have used them to find very rare Scotch bottles.

“The Wispy taste of smoke and salt and iodine.”

Same here. I have a box of Fuente Fuente Opus X 2020 Viento d’Amor paired with a Glenlivet Darkness (#79 of 100) for the launch of the new company or if Trump gets back into office. I hope I have two celebrations coming.

did they bottle because the cask was about to go below 40%?

over 30 is hit and miss on most whiskies, with miss becoming more prominent as age gets higher.

someone (maybe bowmore?) had some ancient casks that dropped just below 40%, so they had to blend with a single cask of something much younger and sell with a very young age statement.

brora was very nice when it was peated. still some bottlings out there, the one I tried was a Rare Malts 150ml.

Port Ellen had a series of sherry casks vat bottled by douglas laing in years past under the Provenance label, they were absolutely fabulous.

The iodine changes it from fine spirits to medical supply. Sad. Some people can taste it and some apparently cannot. Glad for them.

When I have a cold I like Vicks nitequil with a chaser of Absolute Mandarine or Sky Blood Orange vodka. (The citrus makes it all very healthy of course!)

Ah, we agree! I have a bottle of Evan Williams in the Cabinet!

I have a small bottle of J. D. that has a vanilla bean in it and it will eventually be “Kentucky Bourbon” vanilla extract! My wife participated in a church group that went to Haiti and returned with vanilla extract made with rum! You use what you’ve got!
