The US needs to ‘graduate’ from NATO, retain some emeritus status, and let the Europeans manage the organization.
This would disengage the US from direct involvement with Europe’s quarrels and allow the US and the Europeans to negotiate with China and Russia one a one on one basis.
Because everyone "knows" that negotiating as a united front (U.S. together with NATO) is not as effective as when you have dozens of voices, all clamoring for their particularistic interests to be heard!
