US coal production peaked in 2008, when Obama was elected. It has been gradually declining most years since, by his design. Still a major contributor to the energy grid however, and a significant export item.

We get LOTS of 15,000 ton coal trains running through North Idaho all headed from Wyoming to the coal ports on the west coast (mainly Tacoma, I think). It really hurts to see all that US coal going to China.

Many coal plants were prematurely permanently shut, because they were coal plants. It is very expensive and economically stupid to shut a functioning plant for religious reasons. Climate change is a religion.
