Thanksgiving Day Menus and Practices

Thanksgiving is one of our most direct, maybe least commercialized holidays, that focuses on reflection and family and good food. Who we share it with, where, and the day’s menu has changed over the years, but maybe the more that it changes, the more it’s the same.

Who are you spending the day with, how are you spending the day, and what’s the menu?

Well, speaking for myself, if it goes as planned, I will be spending it with my twin teenage sons, maybe gracefully sharing it with my ex. No friends this year. As family tradition follows, I will be the one doing the cooking. Today’s menu includes turkey, stuffing (in the turkey), baked sweet potatoes, mashed regular potatoes, turkey gravy of course, baked or sautéed green beans with onions, jelly, cranberry sauce, and fresh dinner rolls. Dessert is choice of apple or pumpkin pie. We will probably talk some, I’m sure the boys will spend time playing video games or reading, and we will watch a movie or two. Overall, I am hoping for a nice relaxed family day together.

Haha, this is one of those threads where you are told your family has been doing it wrong for the last four generations...

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am going out with a few friends to a restaurant. None of us want to spend all the time and effort cooking. None of us have extended family living nearby, and none of us want to travel to visit extended family .

I prefer well, roasted skin, the dark meat.

I would’ve happily taken the boys to a Thanksgiving buffet at an area casino, we’ve done that on occasion, but the end result would be that I’d have very little time actually with the boys, because they would not want to get together until then, and they would want to go to their mom‘s house immediately afterwards. Taking the effort to cook the dinner, have movies, I get them more willing to spend the entire day with me at my house.

Just me and my husband (family is still in NY; we're not, thankfully.) Husband does most of the cooking. Turkey is smoking in the BGE. Other dishes are the usual - huge bowl of mashed potatoes, dressing, sweet potatoe casserole, green bean casserole, fresh cranberry sauce, gravy and rolls. Only 1 pie this year (apple). I expect to be stuffed to the gills by 2, and asleep on the couch by 4.

I really know how to party!

We had Thanksgiving last weekend with about 150 friends with a Trail Life USA troop. We cooked 13 turkeys outdoors. Either Trash Can Turkeys or deep fried.

Today we’re at my mother-in-law’s house. It’s about 700 miles away. I’m smoking a turkey. Only one daughter is with us as she lives nearby. We don’t usually come at Thanksgiving but our daughter is moving tomorrow and shamed us into helping.

My MIL is a lousy cook so I’m hoping to fix that with the smoked turkey.

Sounds like our plans. Just the wife and me, same menu except jellied cranberry sauce (of which I will eat none), and the addition of creamed corn. Oh yeah, and a pumpkin pie instead of apple. I would have had both but was overruled.

We do our turkey in an oven bag and rub Cajun seasoning on it first.

Personally, I agree.

However, the meme is a riot nonetheless.

... if it goes as planned ...

I don't understand. Are you going to make that full course spread but your plans may or may not pan out? What gives?

We are blessed with triple pies this year.

Apple, pecan, and Milk Bar pumpkin.

Honestly I will probably have coffee and milk bar pumpkin with a bit of barbecued thigh at fear time. I can’t stuff!

But I did have m n ms for breakfast.

Our family used to have a goose for thanksgiving- but can’t find geese in stores around us, so we are going with turkey again. One year we had duck, which I also love, but a goose 🪿 would be perfect.

It’s just my wife and one of our adult children this year, as the rest of the fam is scattered.

This year we’re deviating from tradition and serving roasted domestic duck for the main course, along with the usual sides (potatoes/gravy, corn casserole, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls and butter).

It’s our first try at duck, fingers are crossed.

Teenage boys.

As for dinner itself, it will get prepared, served, and eaten as outlined. No problem with that.
