Child, 12, is charged after chucking alcohol bottles from 32nd floor of Times Square hotel hitting a 24-year-old woman on the head

A 12-year-old child has been charged with reckless endangerment after throwing a bottle of alcohol from the 32nd floor of a New York City hotel skyscraper.

A woman was hurt as the bottle hurtled to the ground, hitting her on the head before smashing into pieces by the Intercontinental Times Square.

The incident initially caused panic and saw West 44th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenue shut down for a brief time just before 5pm on Friday evening, after those on the street below believed the noise to have been the sound of gunshots.

The culprits also included an 11-year-old girl who were staying at the hotel with their guardians when they conducted the reckless stunt.

The 12-year-old was charged with reckless endangerment as a juvenile, but the 11-year-old was not charged because of her age.

The bottle that was thrown is believed to have been a shooter type, often the kind found in a hotel mini bar.

Despite its relatively small size, a 24-year-old woman was injured after being cut in the head by the glass. She was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is said to be in stable condition.

'It sounded like an explosion or gunshots,' one passerby exclaimed.

'I can understand why people thought it was gunshots. When something falls 32 stories and hits the ground it will make a loud noise,' an NYPD officer told the New York Post.

The shutdown of the street lasted for more than one hour and prevented customers from leaving the parking facility.

A worker from a nearby branch of Shake Shack told The Post they thought someone might have been trying to jump out of one of the hotel windows.

Only a nip bottle? Plenty big enough. Drop a penny from that height and it could kill someone. The woman who was hit got lucky.

Exactly. Didn’t think hotel windows that high up could be opened. Expect the woman who got bonked on the head to sue to hotel for a nice big payout. Maybe the kids’ dad can join in the suit.

No it can't. A penny's terminal velocity is about 25 mph. It'll be going the same speed whether you drop it from 50 ft or 300 ft. It miiiight break skin, but that's the most it'll do.

32nd floor. Surprised windows can be opened.

Many fancy hotels have balconies. Or it could have been a rooftop lounge area or mid-height balcony.

The parents will be punished.
Those “nip” bottles are probably $50 from the mini bar!

I’m a bit surprised the windows on the 32nd floor actually open.
