Ward Melville, in collaboration with J. Franklin McElwain, a shoe manufacturer from New Hampshire, founded the Thom McAn brand. The name drew inspiration from Scottish golfer Thomas McCann. The inaugural retail store opened its doors in New York in 1922, offering a selection of uncomplicated styles at a fixed, affordable price. Within five years, the brand expanded to 300 stores, and by 1939, it had a staggering 650 stores.

I wore Cole Hahn Oxfords or penny loafers when I was still working; but I’ve been retired for several years, so I only trot them out for special occasions. Good shoes.

Sears began as a mail order catalog company. If they had returned to that business which Amazon essentially dominated, which is essentially mail order using the internet and computers, Sears would be a major player today

Sneakers. AKA gym shoes. They killed the casual dress shoe market. Especially mens casual dress. With shoes that were comfortable, and usuable for fun, the market for anything like Thom McAn evaporated. If you ain’t wearing a jacket and tie you ain’t wearing anything that resembles a dress shoe.
We watched him every day after school. And there was the boat captain, with a parrot called ‘Fantail’ - can’t recall the name of that show. (Capt. Tugg?)
