I use the Gutenberg Project and have downloaded some classics from them. I'm looking for a source for modern, popular books that I can pay a fee, download to my laptop, and the book is mine even if I terminate a subscription with the source.
Kindle says if I terminate the subscription I lose the book. Besides, with Kindle, can you use a generic computer or is it a Kindle compatible device?
sorry, the only sources i have are all ‘free’ pdfs, college text books, you don’t need to pay a dime, but you’re not looking for that.
for others, here is a link to reddit’s megathread on where to find what type of books
https://www.reddit.com/r/Piracy/wiki/megathread/books/
I use the two sites:
Anna’s Archive — https://annas-archive.org/
This site is a “wrapper” around a number of sites that are “bundled” together (ONE INTERFACE covers them all!).
Z-Library — https://1lib.sk/
As a “supporting member” you get free conversions to your favorite digital format (PDF, ePub, MOBI, etc.)
You can use them for free (limited access and tools, but still great!), or donate (as I do) and enjoy all the features.
Calibre is awesome. It will convert most any format into any other format.
There is a “Convert to Kindle” app I use regularly.
Very easy
Use the Calibre ebook reader software, and add the DeDRM encrpytion cracker.
Then download your Kindle Library to Calibre, and convert to EPUB...
Note: Amazon books published after a certain point in 2023 cannot be cracked easily...
I did not know that!............🤷♂️
Book Bub
Apple allows you to keep them. I buy all mine through their store.
My URL trimmer broke.....................

Which is why I’ll not purchase any more kindle books.

I recceived notice from Amazon that they have discontinued use of MOBI and I can no longer download MOBI to my devices. They have gone to ePUB.
I have almost 26,000 Kindle books and don’t own a Kindle, I just put the Kindle app on all of my computers.
Don’t fret the format. Calibre can convert any format into the one you need.
Free.
kindles are cheap, and well worth getting one of the older ones as long as it is backlit.
I have several. I even keep one in my car just in case I have to wait for something or someone

I think 'ebook.com' also does DRM-free books. as well. Frankly, if the publisher doesn't offer the book in DRM-free epub, I won't buy it no matter how good a book it may be.
Unfortunately no one seems to offer a blanket subscription. Baen.com comes closest. You can buy a "monthly bundle" for $20 where you get everything they publish that month. I wish it was just a flat subscription for exactly the same thing, so I wouldn't have to remember to actually buy a given bundle.
I'll second the Calibre recommendation. It rocks. The project is worth donating a few bucks to as well.
