One of the factors limiting lifespan of wind turbines is gearbox failure, often beginning as soon as seven years. The gears themselves may wear out but usually it is the bearings that fail under severe stress. They may or may not be reparable or replaceable. The publicized lifespan of 20-25 years is wildly optimistic especially for the large scale turbines and blades, even more unrealistic for the offshore variety. Sometimes you see one idle because it is just burned out.
