A former Horry County police officer sustained life-altering injuries while responding to a 2021 plane crash that was later blamed on faulty maintenance, according to a recently filed lawsuit.
Kevin McLean was among the first responders to a May 21, 2021, plane crash just off Socastee Boulevard in which the pilot, 60-year-old James Marklin Harper, was killed.

It seems right to do, if they got injured due to the fault of the person they tried rescuing.
“So 1st responders are suing now for responding?”
Exactly. So now what? While you’re losing blood and half-dead you make the EMS dude (or dudette) sign a liability waiver, or otherwise you choose to die, so that your estate passes to your loved ones rather than get seized by the guy who saves your life?
...and people wonder why we’re not longer “King of the hill” in the view of 85% of the world.
No, they’re suing for being assaulted and severely injured while on the job. Injuries serious enough to limit their ability to work in their profession.

IDK- the article states there was some negligence that caused the plane to crash which is what resulted in the LEO to be injured when it exploded. It sounds like he was severely injured. The lawsuit seems like a reasonable attempt to pay for his injuries/rehab/pain and suffering. Not sure how much Workers Comp would provide or for how long….
Sorry, should’ve read “injured”... on the job. And if he didn’t sue, it’s likely his insurance provider would’ve sued the owner for reimbursement.

Having gone down this road workman’s comp would’ve covered him for about 2 years. If he wins any settlement then he has to reimburse workman’s comp for their payments to him.

Their employer is responsible for what happened.
Elderly nursing home patients with dementia will be sued even more senselessly from harassment or hitting or biting residents do.
They will require families to cover all such incidents.
Lot’s of things going in Horry County these days
Then why don't the cops sue every criminal who assaults them?
Forgive my ignorance , but isnt proper operation something a pilot checks before taking off? hey, the elevators are going up when i push down, I aint flying, or back up to the maintenance done, , --
boss Im done working on the piper elevators, wheres the inspector to sign off on this?? .
as ricky would say "Lucy, youse got a lotta 'splain'n to do! "
from the guy who screwed up putting the elevators on, to the inspector who screwed up signing off on the piss poor work, to the pilot who didnt complete a proper pre flight check. lotssa screw ups all safety measures bypassed leading to this event.
Maybe they should.
Sure, call a cop a name and now they can sue you for defemination, slander etc...Of if someone calls the cops on you and they get into a collision while responding, you get hit with a lawsuit for damages/injuries... Why not...
If you are concerned about this, take great care. It is one thing to risk your life to get criminals and save lives, but if a shelf falls on you because the owner didn’t take care to ensure no undue harm, you should be compensated.
Most agencies will not allow a LEO to sue the criminal.
I was being facetious because someone here thought it was somehow great idea. Deadpan humor...Btw can you imagine the cops able to file lawsuits because someone offended or slandered them...lol

Or, check if your gun is loaded before pulling the trigger?

So you call him (/her) a bastard.
Do they have to provide DNA and genetic research in the suit.
And what if they ARE a bastard???
The folks now being signed up as cops in some areas probably are bastards.
