Mon Dieu! The Pompous French Crave Our Fast Food — Shocked Americans Say They’re Très Stupide
New York Post ^ | March 20, 2024 | Alex Mitchell

France, the oui-oui nation with a notorious reputation for poo-poo-ing American culture has a dirty, delicious little secret — one that sometimes catches tourists by surprise.

The land of boeuf bourguignon harbors a burning love for two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce cheese, pickles and onions on a sesame seed bun, along with the rest of the McDonald’s menu — France is now home to more outlets of the Golden Arches than anywhere in Europe.

SNIP

Why on earth are the French, who eat better than almost anybody else in the Western world, so obsessed with American drive-thru cuisine? Does the South of France actually need a little south in its mouth? Yes, according to Expilly. As much as France might like to stereotype American fast food culture, they’re suckers for branding, like any other consumer — even if its driving their tastebuds to merde.

What they don’t mention is that the French McDonald’s are flat out better than ours. They serve beer. Also way better burgers.

???

French food is born of the peasants eating crap (snails to frog legs) and developing sauces to try to make the crap taste better.

Why would anyone believe that the average Frenchman “eats better than anyone in the Western world.?” Writer is a Stupid euro-fetishist at work. McD food is as good biochemically as any other food. The rest is just adolescent posturing. Lots of that here btw, Getting tiresome.

Agreed. And I pity those on this forum who purport to suffer diarrhea every time they have Taco Bell. Me, I love good authentic Mexican food AND I also love Taco Bell

“the French, who eat better than almost anybody else in the Western world,”

*Almost* ... because Italy also exists.

I’ve had McDonald’s burgers in France. It’s crap just like it is here.

When I went to Paris I was disappointed with the food. I went out of my way to eat traditional French food and was less than impressed. I will freely admit that when I was young in the 70s and 80s the food sucked. It now stands against any food in the world.

German, Italian, Mexican, southern cuisine...all delicious.

French, not so much.

To each his own.

I suspect price is a key factor in uptake, and that for a given level of quality, US franchises deliver a better price than local chains. That’s been McDonald’s selling point from the start. Why risk the runs from some local greasy spoon of indeterminate hygiene when Mickey D’s will deliver the same guaranteed not to make you sick product in every city in the land at a better price?

Nothing wrong with that. I love this French sauce I’ve learned to make for a casserole.
Rotisserie chicken from Costco. cut up the white meat, mixed it in with cooked rice, pre-cooked carrots, celery and onions. Chopped up some cremini mushrooms and sauteed them in unsalted butter. Added a bit of chopped garlic to that. Thickened it with flour and added chicken broth, white wine, cream, one bay leaf, two sprigs fresh rosemary and 6 sprigs of fresh thyme to make it taste ‘French’. All poured over the rice and veggies. Covered with bread crumbs (with a little butter melted on those) and baked about 30 min then broiler to toast the bread crumb.

Gotta agree It’s in their dna. I went into some hole in the wall restaurant in Paris and ordered steak and potatoes and was absolutely blown away by how good it was.

“McDo” (what they affectionately call it in France) is of higher quality there just like a lot of American fast food brands are in many other countries. It’s our version that is crap.

At least, in Europe you can order a “Newton Burger”, and, Viola! You get a “Quarter-Pounder”.

Now that is a truly interesting and informing thought.

I’ll add that to my axiomatic beliefs.

Scarcity causes the population to eat snails and frog legs. By extrapolation, Germans eat Krout...... it’s all they have

Corollary: Prosperity can be measured by the continuing growth in height between the top and bottom of the burger bun.

Years ago, I stopped for dinner at a small restaurant in little-known Perigord, France. It was so incredibly good, in comparison I have never failed to remember that site when I have a good meal.
