I moved to an Arizona oasis that banned cars. It's as dreamy as I expected, but it can be a struggle to venture outside it.

John-Robert Rodríguez moved to Culdesac, a car-free community in Arizona, in October 2023.

He's never liked driving and believes that fewer cars can foster more community. Life at Cudesac is great, but he still has to deal with the car-dependent world outside its gates.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with John-Robert Rodríguez, 24, a teacher in Tempe, Arizona, who lives in the car-free community Culdesac. Rodríguez moved to Culdesac, which has about 150 residents so far but will eventually house 1,000 residents in 760 units, in October 2023 from Pflugerville, Texas, after growing up in Florida. The conversation was edited for length and clarity.

I heard about Culdesac when it was still in development. I went for a tour in August of 2023, and it looked just like the mockups. It looked just like how the community said it was going to look all those years ago.

I don't drive. I have a license, but I don't drive.

I moved in October.

When you start removing the dependency on cars, you start seeing more people. When you go to a city, the more cars that you see on the road, the fewer people you'll see on the sidewalks. People need to be out and about in order to build the community.

“And it smels like manure”

Much, much worse than CO2 emissions.

He wears earrings. No reason to listen to any man that wears earrings.

Expect to see more positive stories on 15 minute cities. At first it will be voluntary and you can leave when you wish and go back to your previous lifestyle. Eventually, it will be mandatory and you will be assigned your living location.

He’s gay, I think. I noted that he wears earrings. No woman worth her salt is gonna go near this guy, but the gays and trannies will LOVE him!

It’s 600 people. Why do you care? We have 359 million here.

And has he actually spent a summer here?

Some people are naturally okay with the hot Phoenix summers. I am, despised having grown up in Connecticut. My Canadian wife does not like it. I had to walk two miles in 115F August, 2018 weather in Mesa to find my 17 year old daughter when she got lost with the car shortly after moving here.

I could not imagine living here without a car. The greater Phoenix area offers much, but it is geographically large because we are not much on skyscrapers.

Chose to live in the TV Series The Prisoner

Even the Prisoner had those little golf cart taxi cabs.

More pretending. This is Maricopa County, the fourth most populous county in the United States. It’s an apartment complex with parking on the street.

Also, using the term oasis, is a big misnomer. Click bait.

I swear I have heard of communities that have no accommodation for automobiles with only paths for walking or golf carts.

My niece moved to London and loves it there, and walks or takes mass transit everywhere.

The actor that was the main guy in “Peaky Blinders” and then played Oppenheimer had an interview when the first show got big.

Q: “So the opening scene where you are on horseback - did you grow up around horses?

A: No. I grew up in London. But they asked me that for the job. And of course I said I could ride. Same with driving a car - I’d never driven a car before growing up in London. But I’m an actor, and I’ll do what I need to do to play the part.
