Exploding deer population in New Jersey
local news, internet | 04/11/2024 | me

People in many states regard N.J. as not much more than a couple exits off of not so scenic I95. But there is a different world just a few miles north and west, and south central N.J. (Pine Barrens). As the suburbs expand and hunting is not permitted in many areas and less hunters in general, we have a ridiculous amount of whitetail deer. Here in Hunterdon County (ironic name) it's swemi-rural with fields, wood, streams, farms and houses on a couple acres or more. Every morning I see at least a half dozen sleeping under our pines and cedars. They eat everything, including holley! So, this year I'm thinking of bagging one or two. Looking for some good recipes for tenderloin or another cut. I have hunted small game, and can clean rabbits & pheasants, but never a deer. A good video on how to properly field dress would also be helpful.

One of the best pieces of meat I have ever eaten was a tenderloin smoked with apple wood. A friend was great at smoking lots of meats and fish.

I work with a guy that was on the receiving end of a deer that was hit by a semi. It splattered his car with such a force that the deer chum blew out his driver side windows and covered the inside of the car and him with minced deer sludge. He was on his way to work and not what you would call a happy camper.

Hah! I eat a wide variety of foods. I love good food, and love to cook also. Fresh veggies from my garden, and steaks on the grill. Life is good.

It’s been a few years since I last saw an exploding deer. 1974, September in Kansas on I-70...........................

Yes indeed. Life is good in that respect in America. Even for people who live below the poverty line (whatever that means, since it is changed often for political purposes) a wide variety of foodstuffs are available.

People in poverty now drive nice cars, have large flatscreen televisions, and can eat lobster.

Very oddly I have had the same experiences as you described. Sleep deprived driving hallucinations and a road covered in a sea of blood from what must have been a deer obliterated by a tractor trailer.
Although the deer blood was at night, it was not the same trip as the sleep hallucinations.

Just moved from Hunterdon last year after 39 years there. During that time I hit 8 deer with escalating costs to repair and my wife hit two. seemed like there were plenty of hunters but also plenty of deer lovers and local restrictions on hunting. We let bow hunters hunt our property but neighbors objected and ran them off.

On the other hand the coyote population is growing and they take an increasing share. These aren’t scrawny animals either weighing 65 pounds. Of course they love small cats and dogs too.

Hunterdon is a beautiful place but also perfect deer territory. Bears love it too.

In my yard, the question of deer elimination boils down to either shooting or poisoning them.

The problem with shooting is having to be at the right place at exactly the right time.

That leaves poisoning. What poison to use? Poisons are it turns out hard to come by.

Deterrence is futile. Extermination is the only remedy

Yes...it certainly made me blink!

Fortunately, I don’t drive crazy like that anymore.

I drove down to Florida to visit my best friend last month, and in two weeks, put over 5,000 miles on my car, but my wife would not speak to me if I tried to drive straight through, and...it is much nicer to break it up!
