Also ZZ Top (who is in my top 5 favorite bands of all time) is not southern rock.

For a "sub-genre", southern rock has quite a lot of variety. IMO, the Allman Brothers were central, followed by Skynyrd. However, ZZ Top is no more different from those two than, say, The Charlie Daniels Band. ZZ Top emphasizes the heavy blues sound and Texas shuffle tempo, while CDB kept a lot more bluegrass in its signature sound. I guess each southern rock group mixes the rock, blues and country elements in somewhat different proportions... but they're all present.

ZZ Top is touring this year with the current iteration of Skynyrd, so that must signify some connection.

“I got to hang out with Gregg Allman for a few hours at an outdoor concert once. My friend’s dad was the promoter so we got to go anywhere on the grounds. Found ourselves walking around the tour buses and ran into him. He invited us into his bus and we just talked. It was right after his breakup with Cher. Main thing I remember was getting high AF.”

Oh wow! What a story! Living in Georgia, the Allman Brothers was considered THE southern rock band for those of us in our teens in the 70s.

“I hate Freebird.”

LOL. I get that. It’s not my favorite southern rock song but it’s iconic being a ballad and rock n roll with a long killer guitar solo and good vocals.

It was way overplayed on the radio. I’d rather here almost any other song by Skynyrd for what it’s worth.

Same here, since 1976. And you're right, always finding something new.

He always sounded better live, in concert. I miss TP, born on
the same day...10/20.

I only got to see him live once, the year he passed. We could never afford tickets to shows like that. They were a want, not a need.

He died just a day after my Mom did, so I was in Gainesville when the news broke. It was stunning. He’s just a few days younger than my oldest brother, who has also passed since then. With Tom’s channel on XM radio, it almost seems like he’s still with us. Still miss him. With Tom Leadon gone now, too, no more Mudcrutch either.

I’ve had considerable windshield time over my life with the radio as my travel buddy. I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard that song. which is kinda weird to miss.

Just listened to it, damn good song. Don’t know how and the hell I missed that after all the windshield time I’ve had.

Yep, we were crushed. It took me more than a year to even
listen to Petty and the Heartbreakers.

In '22 I went and watched 'The Who' here in Phoenix with my
son at an Amphitheater. Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs
opened. It was great seeing him.
