The decline of Black players in MLB should be a warning about the war on DEI

As Major League Baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson and his pioneering contributions to the game, I can’t help but think about the fact that the league is reporting a historically low number of Black American players in its ranks: only 6%.

I think this is a teachable moment at a time when diversity efforts across various arenas (no pun intended) have come under attack. Major League Baseball, unfortunately, is a prime example of what it looks like to talk the talk without always walking the walk.

Gee what about the concern of over-representation in football and basketball? Oh the hand-wringing....

There are only 34 black NHL players.

George Laroque was a great community oriented guy.

DEI now means that, blacks and women who don’t make it into the top ranks of their professions, are being discriminated against. They have to be accepted into the top of their professions, because, DEI says so.

DEI has been working to place people on top or organizations, even if they are the least qualified to occupy those positions. We have plenty of those in high government positions, such as “our” secretary of defense, and vice-president.

Agree.

Many are from Cuba, Central and South America.

No. It’s 97% white and 3% all others. Within that 3%, 34 players are black.

Because baseball is more popular in those countries. (And Japan too.)

Baseball is less popular with kids in the U.S. today, whether they are black are white.

Consider basketball. Non-U.S. European whites are increasing in the NBA, while U.S. whites are decreasing.

But this year, the projected top 7 of the NBA draft only has one U.S. born black player.

The top two picks include a black player from France, and a white player from Serbia.

The expected no. 3 is white, from the U.S., the expected no. 4 is white from Lithuania, the expected no. 5 is the first black player from the U.S.

The expected no. 6 is black from France, and the expected no. 7 is white from the U.S.

This may not be usual, but three white players will be taken before the first black player from the U.S., and four before the second.(Last year's no. 1 was black and from France.

European players are now among the top players drafted, black or white. The top two MVP candidates are white from Europe. (Serbia, Slovenia), and no. 4 is black from Greece, and no. 6 is white from Lithuania.

A U.S.-born player hasn't been MVP since the 2018 award. Last year, a player from Cameroon won, the two years before that Serbia, and the two year before that from Greece. So, this will be the 6th year in a row a foreign-born player wins MVP.

There are plenty of black Latinos. Are we supposed to have a quota system or a merit based system? Imagine if this article was written about the falling number of white Americans in the NBA.

Nearly half the players were black when I was growing up in the ‘70s. In those days, I was a Dodger fan. Our best hitter was Reggie Smith. Dusty Baker was one of the four Dodgers who got 30 home runs in the same season for the first time. Weak hitting Glen Burke was Rick Monday’s backup in CF, along with Lee Lacy. Pinch Hit specialist Manny Mota was on that team. Teddy Martinez was a backup infielder. We are well about 12% there. No pitchers. However Bob Gibson already proved that a black athlete could be the best of the best in that department. Dwight Gooden was also exceptional for the Mets a few years later.

Some of the best of the best were black in that era (Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson, Vida Blue)

There’s no damn ‘war on DEI’. DEI is at war with common sense and fairness. I’m on the side of common sense and fairness.

6% is American black players. How many world black players are there. What is the percentage of blacks in the world? They always select a bar that shows what they want to show.

Maybe I missed something?

3% of the total being 34 of any race=too many players in the NHL.
