Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts dies aged 80: Musician best known for group's hit song Ramblin' Man passed away 'peacefully' at Florida home.
Guitarist Dickey Betts died at the age of 80 in his Florida home on Thursday.
Betts wrote some of the bands most famous songs including Ramblin' Man.
Betts is known for writing some of The Allman Brothers most famous songs including 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,' 'Blue Sky,' and their only Top Ten hit, 'Ramblin' Man.'

Had a friend who shared the (small) stage w/Dickey at a benefit a few miles north of where Dickey lived (back in the 80’s). They gave him a crossbow for his participation because he was known to hunt the feral hog.

NO! What a sweet voice.
Caught Dickey and Great Southern and James Cotton Blues Band in 1980. At the end of the concert, both bands came out and jammed, musicians leaving the stage one at a time until it was only Dickey and James going about 1000 miles an hour.

Anyway, I'm glad the Allman Brothers gravitated back towards the Gulf Coast instead of becoming permanent California residents. I got to see them in New Orleans twice, once at a little outdoor venue in Audubon Park called "The Butterfly", right next to the Mississippi River. Someone even took pictures:

My cousin was the road manager for the Allman Brothers for 6 months or so/ Circa 1986 or so. I can only guess that in those dark days for the Allman’s, that my cousin’s job was a living hell. Dickie Betts pulled a knife on him/ I regret not asking Cuz for some details on this.
For me, my cousins street cred shot up so high. I was so in awe of him, that I did not ask him to elaborate. Such as how high and or drunk Dickie was.
RIP and I toast Dickie Betts for some of the Allmans best tunes, riffs and guitar solos. Melissa for example. Blue sky. What a soulful dude!
