Competition in the Tex-Mex and Mexican segments of the restaurant space has been fierce in recent years, led by fast-food chains Yum Brands' Taco Bell (YUM) and Chipotle (CMG) .
Taco Bell is king with about 7,936 locations in the U.S., according to data company ScrapeHero. Chipotle has a good size of the market with 3,398 units. Other major players include Qdoba with over 750 locations and Del Taco (TACO) with over 600.
Certain Mexican casual restaurant chains have had financial difficulties trying to compete and needed to file for bankruptcy. Chevy's Fresh Mex, which had as many as 37 locations filed bankruptcy a couple of times, most recently in 2018, and currently has 18 locations. Other Mexican chains have filed bankruptcy and shuttered permanently, including Don Pablo's, which filed bankruptcy in 2017 and closed down in 2019. Another, Chi-Chis, filed bankruptcy and closed permanently in 2004.

How’s that damn three seashell thing work?
Why is Taco Bell even mentioned compared to a company that has 37 locations? I mean, come on, 37 locations? That’s not even a regional player, let alone anything more than a footnote in the space.
Don’t get me wrong, no fan of Taco Bell, but seriously, some little not even regional brand goes BK, why the heck would you mention Taco Bell?

Here in Phoenix, the dominant local player is Filiberto’s. So much so that there is a flotilla of knock-offs with eyllow signs and similar names (Poliberto’s, Julioberto’s, Eriberto’s, Rolberto’s, Riliberto’s, Adalberto’s, Hilberto’s)
The Chevy’s near me closed about three years ago, unfortunately. Good food, nice accommodations, kid friendly (could get loud) - and an automated tortilla maker making fresh tortillas at all times.
Really sorry to see it go - I thought all of them were long gone.
I had the same reaction. I don’t know the point of it all.
I use to like taco smells when they had burritos the size of your forearm for .99 cents.
It's not Chevy's Fresh Mex (the chain with 37 locations) that is the subject of this article, it's Tijuana Flats in Florida. According to the article, Tijuana Flats declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy and sold 11 of its locations in Florida to Flatheads LLC.
BTW, I used to go to Chevy's a lot when I lived in California. IMHO, Chevy's Fresh Mex was modeled after Papacito's in Texas, not Taco Bell.

It’s not Taco Bell that’s putting other Mexican chains out of business. It’s the independent restaurants run by Hispanic immigrants. The one by me has a line that starts forming a half hour before they open. Best Mexican food in the USA!

When I lived in Seattle, Taco Time was our favorite. Heck, their corporate offices were on Maple Valley highway just east of Renton. In fact, I didn’t know they were not a national chain until I moved out of the area 13 years ago.
Folks, the “competitor” is Tijuana Flats.
My first job was at Taco Bueno in Texas. It used to be top-notch but the quality is falling off.
The seashells were a joke between the screenwriters. One of their wives had used seashells to decorate the bathroom and they were trying to figure out why.
This is a universal phenomenon. I went to a Mexican restaurant recently and the dish included a little bowl of "beans." It tasted like lard disovled it hot water with some bean paste mixed in. Another time I went to a local restaurant that had a lot of potential until they made some fresh bright young girl with a degree in hospitality management as their manager. Because of dietary constraints we asked that part of what was included on one standard dish be substituted with something that we could not eat on the dish we wanted. No can do we were told. The substitution would interfere with how they "plate" their food and mess up their portion counting. It would mean someone else ordering the meal with that side wouldn't be able to get it. So I asked them how they predicted the exact number of orders of each item on the menu they would get every night. Ended up walking out in disgust.
We have turned the universe over to braindead nitwits who get taught garbage in schools. Oh, also, vote Biden.
