Cakewalk — “Cakewalks” were dances enslaved Africans performed on plantations mocking the mannerisms of their enslavers. It has since been twisted to mean “easy victory.” Uppity — “Uppity” traces back to the Jim Crow South as an epithet white people reserved for Black people who didn’t show them enough respect.

Yeah like the slaves would dare to do that. It’s called a cakewalk because it was a courting ritual where girls baked a cake and her beau (secret or otherwise) would buy the cake and get to walk out with her. Also sometimes he got to be first on her dance card.

No, actually the CAKEWALK was a term that comes down to us from contests ( usually held by blacks, for blacks ) at the end of the 19th century, whose first prize was a...CAKE! There were many different songs written especially for these dances and sheet music still exists.

These contests and dances became famous and many teams/acts made it to the vaudeville stage.

Exactly, the term Cakewalk was co-opted by later groups, just like they’re determined to co-opt terms today.

They were NEVER done on a plantation, nor by any slave!

Cakewalk is a kind of dance/dance contest, with the prize being a CAKE; though yes, it WAS a "black" thing; whites didn't enter these contests.
