I don't have personal empirical experience in that regard, but my understanding is that one has fully recovered from alcoholism (or any other addiction disorder) on the day that one's life ends.

Up until then, it's "Clean and sober for nn years" or whatever, until the end of life. Which is a good thing for the person involved, but only goes so far in remediating the damage already done by the bottle or the needle or whatever.
