Fake Meat Is Failing. Could Jeff Bezos Save It?

Welcome to Delicious or Distressing, where we rate recent food memes, videos, and other entertainment news. Last week we discussed Trader Joe’s hot new mini totes.

Lauren Sánchez, vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund and Jeff Bezos’ fiancée, announced Tuesday that the fund would commit $60 million to establish Bezos Centers for Sustainable Protein. These centers plan to research and create new fake meats that ostensibly taste better, are better for us, and cost less to manufacture. The commitment is part of the $10 billion pledge that Bezos made in 2020 through the Bezos Earth Fund to fight climate change over the next decade.

When I hear of a company even mentioning this as food, that company, and everything associated with them, gets crossed off my list. I’m sure they’ll try to sneak it in somewhere, but my spidey sense is pretty good about such things.

[I remember early in 2020 when pandemic hoarding got started, the toilet paper and meat cases were bare.
However, guess which, erm, food couldn’t be given away??!?]

Note how the picture doesn’t show price tags. That gives the game away. Fake beef is twice the price of the real thing. Used to be 3x. Needs to be the same price or lower. Meat eaters might pay the same price for fake meat. A premium is out of the question, except for vegans.

Soy fillers are used in all kinds of things, including beef patties and chicken nuggets. They sell very well. The key is the products taste like meat and are not only not more expensive, they are cheaper than products without the filler. That’s the niche - a lower-priced product, not Impossible Burger patties 2x the price of the real thing.

Hmmm...

For extra zing for your taste buds/tongue and your belly, eat a bowl of live yellow jackets.

What are those things?

When I visited South Korea, I smelled something very funky in the market street. Then I saw someone with a big fryer full of things that looked somewhat like that. They were silkworm larvae. Apparently, during the Korean War, there wasn’t much food so people ate silkworm larvae. And they developed a taste for it, so silkworm larvae are still sold in South Korea.

Even during panic buying events like pending disasters, the only shelves that remained stocked were the bogus meat products.

Lol, I have an old recipe for Cherokee Yellowjacket Soup. But since I acquired the recipe, I haven’t seen a single yellowjacket. Some critter around here must really like them.

These are liberals we are talking about... they aren’t going to sell this stuff at or below the current price of meat, which for chicken leg quarters would be around 80 cents a lb...

They will instead work very hard to use excessive regulation to raise the price of meat until it is well over the cost of their product.

These funds that liberals have don’t really exist to do what they seem... instead they are slush funds for laundering money. One rich guy’s fund transfers money to another family member’s fund or to a friend’s, and vice versa, as a deductable charitable donation, etc..

A sizable chunk of the population eats taco bell, McDonalds and jack in the box for regular calories. Does anyone think that swapping out lab grown protein.soy protein or legume protein would have any different texture or taste vs that already processed garbage? If you do then you are delusional. Taco bell freely admits it taco meat has soy protein in it they won’t tell you the percentage but it’s there. The pink slime in nuggets might as well come from a vat it would be better than the ammonia laced mechanically ground chicken bits they bleach to “white meat” in every McDonalds chicken paddie.or nugget. I lol when people get uppity about food and then go get fast food in the same breath. Here is a good exercise, go to McDonalds get quarter pounder with cheese and fries take it and put it at room temp inside a sealed glass case leave it and watch what happens to it. There is this exact display at my gym in Frisco Texas it has a faded receipt next to it from 5 years ago not a hit of mold nor decomposition it looks like it just came out the wrapper and people eat that rubbish.

Wish I had that problem (no yellowjackets around)!   For some reason, they like us, and keep trying to build nests around here every year.   We keep hoping someone will let us know about some reliable way to repel them from the whole area surrounding our home, that really works.
