Trump VP contender Kristi Noem writes of killing dog – and goat – in new book
The Guardian ^ | April 26, 2024 | Betsy Reed

....In 2024 Kristi Noem, a strong contender to be named running mate to Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, has managed to go one further – by admitting killing a dog of her own.

“Cricket was a wirehair pointer, about 14 months old,” the South Dakota governor writes in a new book, adding that the dog, a female, had an “aggressive personality” and needed to be trained to be used for hunting pheasant....By taking Cricket on a pheasant hunt with older dogs, Noem says, she hoped to calm the young dog down and begin to teach her how to behave. Unfortunately, Cricket ruined the hunt, going “out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life”.

Noem describes calling Cricket, then using an electronic collar to attempt to bring her under control. Nothing worked. Then, on the way home after the hunt, as Noem stopped to talk to a local family, Cricket escaped Noem’s truck and attacked the family’s chickens, “grabb[ing] one chicken at a time, crunching it to death with one bite, then dropping it to attack another”.

Cricket the untrainable dog, Noem writes, behaved like “a trained assassin”.

When Noem finally grabbed Cricket, she says, the dog “whipped around to bite me”. Then, as the chickens’ owner wept, Noem repeatedly apologised, wrote the shocked family a check “for the price they asked, and helped them dispose of the carcasses littering the scene of the crime”.

Through it all, Noem says, Cricket was “the picture of pure joy”.

“I hated that dog,” Noem writes, adding that Cricket had proved herself “untrainable”, “dangerous to anyone she came in contact with” and “less than worthless … as a hunting dog”.

“At that moment,” Noem says, “I realised I had to put her down.”

I went to a vet and had my dog humanely euthanized

As I said, death is sanitized. Do you really think that made it better for the dog? Why didn’t you do it yourself? It was your dog, why didn’t you let it die a natural death? Too inconvenient?

As to your second point, there were reasons she did not sign the first version. You look at single points like a liberal, instead of the system.

A Greek friend hosted an annual bbq. We shared turning a spit with a lamb on it. Spent the afternoon partying. His favorite part of the meal was the eyeballs. I couldn’t get there.

Yes, it made it better for the dog. Place an IV, give the drugs and she is gone. I sat with my dog through the whole process. She could barely walk and was not eating. . I wasn’t going to take her in the back yard and shoot her, even though my family has guns and concealed carry license. You can easily torture a dog if the bullet doesn’t kill on the first shot. It took her two shots to kill the goat. Noem is now officially toast.

“I think he should pick Ron. Maximum gravitas is needed.”

Gravitas!! LOL!!

Ronnie reminds me of the Unknown Comic from The Gong Show. Not ready for prime time...

There was no reason she needed to shoot a puppy when she has a car, and animal rescue shelters in her state. She took the lazy way out.

That sounds crazy.   Why would you want that devil dog foisted on an unsuspecting family at a rescue shelter?   She took the honorable way out.   She kept a child from being bitten to death for an insane dog's bloody lark.

Your chose to do it that way but yet you criticize others who do it another way. YOUR WAY IS HUMANE you righteously declare.

As I said, you act like a liberal, looking at one point of a system and make your judgment.

Exactly- rogue animals can’t be trusted- even if trained- the tendency to revert rogue is still there- and you don’t want a dog like that around kids or elderly-

I had a friend who got a part pit bull and golden retriever mix from a rescue. The dog bit two kids unprovoked. That is the type of dog you euthanize, not a dog who cannot hunt, eats chickens, and maybe tried to bite Noem. Noem does not state the dog actually bit her “ it whipped around to bite her”. No actual bite, which makes me think she used that statement to make an excuse about her executing her dog, because the dog attacked chickens and was a terrible hunter. My friend brought her dog back to the rescue, explained the situation and gave the dog back. What the rescue did after that is unknown. You take the dog to the humane society and/ or rescue. They assess the dog for dangerous traits. You explain what the dog’s behavior is at home.At that point, a decision is made. Noem did not even do that, and now she ruined her career.. Noem trying to look like a tough woman effectively killed her political career. I can just see the commercials if she is Trumps VP or cabinet pick.

Agreed. The animals should have been rehomed or humanely euthanized by a veterinarian. If you live out in the wild in Alaska, fine, you have to handle things yourself. Unless the animals were an immediate, attacking threat, she didn’t need to shoot them.

Exactly. People using the excuse that they have to do this because its rural living .They better not have a car, shop at the grocery store, have a computer. It’s not the 1800s anymore. Take the dog to a professional who can assess behavior, train and find a home with someone who can deal with a hyper dog. If the dog is determined to be dangerous, at that point you euthanize.

Political death wish? I don’t know. Obama ate the dog and got elected twice. If an animal is dangerous they have to go, but they don’t have to be eaten...unless I can get some prime rib out of them.

A female relative adopted a large stray dog (not from a shelter). It loved her, but hated her husband and everyone else.
It did get along with her smaller dog, so they kept it for several years.
Then when the owner got pregnant, she became concerned about the safety of the expected child.
After evaluation by their vet, the vet said the dog was dangerous, advised them to put it down, and agreed to do it.
They decided to wait and see the dog's reaction to the child.
When they carried the child in for the first time, the dog growled and sealed its own fate.
When a powerful dog shows aggression sometimes there isn't any other option.
