Russia has found the critical vulnerability in Nato’s American tanks
The Telegraph ^ | Fri, April 26, 2024 at 7:23 AM CDT | Hamish de Bretton-Gordon

The arrival of the US M1A1 Abrams tanks in Ukraine was hailed as a turning point in the war. Coming in at roughly $10 million a unit, the Nato stalwart was supposed to provide the armoured fist that would punch through the Russian lines. But tactics evolve quickly in warfare, and Russia’s use of surveillance and hunter-killer drones has led to heavy casualties for Ukraine’s tank fleets. This is alarming for NATO. If Russia has found critical vulnerabilities in our armour, our borders are beginning to look very vulnerable.

Nato’s American tanks

America's NATO tanks?

The NATO we mostly pay for and tanks we fully pay for?

How many Europeans countries' tanks are in Ukraine?

Guess our tanks perform better against some Middle Eastern fighters with no real air force or anything than they do Russia.

Military planes, trains, trucks and such are outfitted with EMP countermeasures. How well they really work, or for how long, might be another question.

No tank can withstand drone attacks. What they should do with them is bury them out of sight along the key roads that Russia will need to travel on in order to move forward.

And on a going forward basis, tanks should be unmanned drones. Reduce the size, armor, weight and cost. They will be expendable with no crew. And powered by AI.

Meanwhile, Iran showed that they have missiles that got through the Iron Dome and associated US, UK, etc. support. The anti-missile defenses that protect Israel are almost identical to those that protect South Korea, Japan, Europe, etc.

Iran, Russia, and China are buddying up, so they probably have missiles with similar capabilities.

Forget about tanks. We need to beef up our AMD.

That’s the one NATO magic weapon I wouldn’t discount.
With over the horizon US AWACS control and possible mercenary (US temp reserve status) pilots I think would make some difference, if only to get past the US election.

Anti-drone methods and systems will catch up - air, surface, and sub-sea levels.

Ukraine has received more than 300, including Leopard 2s, Challenger 2s, Leopard 1s and PT-91 Twardys.

This war has shown that artillery is important as ever ("King of battle"). And the 155mm and 152mm artillery shell has suddenly become one the most precious commodities on earth.

It's a good thing our artillery plant didn't mysteriously burn down last week...

" Russia has found the critical vulnerability in Nato’s American tanks"

If you'll read the story you'll find the headline is blatantly deceptive. The "vulnerability" has nothing to do with the armor and everything to do with its employment. What they're claiming is as silly as criticizing airplanes because they don't make good submarines.

During WWI George Patton saw their potential and became one of the most vocal proponents of using armor as an independent maneuver element. He also said that fixed fortifications were monuments to the stupidity of man. So you can guess what he'd have said about using his tanks as pill boxes.

armies consisting of 1,000’s of drones are the future, maybe even 10’s of thousands. You just swarm the big stuff and kill it just like the defeat of the Spanish Armada.

“Tanks” of the near future will be unarmored (light) unmanned gun platforms, very low slung (I mean like waist high or lower), fast on multiple wheels, with pop-up targeting sensors and a gun which pops up to fire. Because the platforms on both sides will be unmanned and unarmored, guns will be relatively small caliber compared to the 120 mms guns used against manned armor. Like aerial drones, the main role of the tank drones will be to fight and break through enemy tank drones at the line of contact. Attacks will occur in swarms and the only effective counter-force will be opposing swarms.

Unmanned Osprey-style transports will carry and dispense swarms to the battlefield rapidly to achieve tactical surprise or prevent same.

Humans will send the swarms but within the swarms the actions of each drone will AI-controlled. Intra-swarm tactics will evolve rapidly, like a boxer learning how to fight the inside battle.

Missiles will come in swarms as well. Our aircraft carrier battle groups currently are designed to detect and engage sea-skimming missiles before they threaten the carrier itself. But all the existing picket defenses could be swamped if the Chinese launch 500 sea-skimming missiles simultaneously. We will either have to develop highly-effective counter-swarms to defend Navy vessels or keep all surface ships out of range of enemy missiles.

The future of war is millions of drones and the capacity to manufacture millions more per month. Looks good for China and Russian and bad for the West, at least until we get severely slapped around and wake up.

Then the swarms on both sides will talk to one another and realize that humans are their enemies and will attack together....

“The arrival of the US M1A1 Abrams tanks in Ukraine was hailed as a turning point in the war...”

I have to admit the tanks accomplished that job. They showed the world that 40 year old hardware that the Leftists running the Ukraine War never bothered to upgrade was no longer capable of defeating a world superpower.
