Re: your “I like to haggle”...
In a souvenir shop during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, I overheard the wife of a couple telling her husband that they should try to “jew ‘em down” on the price of a statue. The opinion was delivered in normal conversational tones in a fairly busy shop without any hint of situational awareness.
I guess that was my worst encounter with the ugly American experience.
In my first year out of New York I went to a thrift store to buy some clothes. I attempted to haggle with the clerk. I was greeted with bemusement and contempt. I gave the clerk her first ugly New Yorker experience.
On the bright side, I got a Hart Schaffner Marx black cashmere overcoat for next to nothing.
