The Countries With The Most Students Studying Abroad
STATISTA ^ | 05/07/2024 | Anna Fleck

The world's two most populous nations, China and India, have the highest numbers of students studying overseas.

Statista's Anna Fleck reports that, according to data published by UNESCO, more than one million Chinese students were studying abroad in 2021. India’s total was close to half of this, with around 508,000 students living in other countries.

Following some way behind come Vietnam, Germany and Uzbekistan.

The United States was the largest destination country for students studying abroad with over 833,000 there in 2021. It was followed by the United Kingdom (nearly 601,000), Australia (around 378,000), Germany (over 376,000) and Canada (nearly 318,000).

This data was published as part of the International Organization for Migration's (IOM) 2024 World Migration Report, which provides an overview of the global state of migration using the latest available data, published Tuesday. This ranges from data on asylum seekers fleeing war to economic migrants seeking labor opportunities, and as this chart shows, to students living abroad.

According to the report, the total number of internationally mobile students has been on the rise over the last two decades. UNESCO data reveals that where 2.2 million students were studying abroad in 2001, that figure had climbed to 6.39 million students in 2021.

> more than one million Chinese students were studying abroad <

A lifetime ago I was a security guard for a major university. And I always volunteered for the holiday shifts. Double-time and a half pay was a great incentive.

The campus was empty during the holidays. It was like a ghost town. Except when I walked through the science buildings. There they were, the Chinese students, busy doing lab work.

That was impressive. And also a bit concerning.

I’m too old to study abroad. At my age, if I haven’t figured her out by now, I never will.

This leads me to wonder what happened to those students?

Modern China has contributed jack in moving the human race forward.

Why are we the largest destination?

I’m constantly reading of the grass is always greener everywhere else on planet earth.

Yet when it comes to education and state of the art healthcare-the world comes to us.

RE: Yet when it comes to education and state of the art healthcare-the world comes to us.

Despite all the doom and gloom we read everyday, when it comes to Science, Math, Engineering and Technology, we are still the best in the world, and our Universities still have the best professors and spend more money than any other country on average in these fields.

I would bet that most Chinese and Indian students come here for the HARD sciences, not the fluff “studies” programs.

I’ve thought about that. As I noted earlier, those Chinese students were very impressive. Hard workers.

Perhaps when they returned home, they were hamstrung by the rather rigid Chinese Communist Party.

You made an extremely valid point. I think that you nailed the answer too.

I saw first hand at MSU in Wichita Falls TX. mid-70’s.

Couple of older gentlemen (28 - 30) from China, paying extra to study in ...

Godforsaken, dry, dusty Wichita Falls?!

Well, it was the home to F14 training for the Persian Air Force, and a SAC base as well ...

Very few returned home. Why would they want to? They came here to get away from China.

In the past ten years this may have changed as Chicoms now send out CCP with orders.

I’ve Sid for a long time that China’s most important export was students, many seeking advanced degrees. What’s also notable is that they are typically in some engineering or scientific field. Definitely no ‘woke’ degree programs for them.

I recall when my youngest was a science student at a state university in the 70’s, she complained to us that the lab work was very difficult in that the instructors were difficult to understand as they were ALL foreigners and spoke poor English..
