"Virtually all of the folks nuked in Japan are dead. It happened 70 years ago. Almost all of them were women and children."

Women and children were bona fide war targets.
Made so by their government, by Hirohito and the Imperil Empire of Japan's liberal use of women and children labour.

Not pleasant but true.

With men at the front these "helpless" women and children helped prolonged it's imperil war effort. It's war machine could not have functioned without the guns, ammo, etc. manufactured in small cottage sized industries and provided to army and navy until the end of the war.

Short of an full scale invasion such as the planned Olympic campaign and others, the A-Bomb was the only way to stop them from continuing their support of their government's war.

Not pleasant but true.

No invasion was necessary. The Japanese could have been starved out. It's been over a thousand years since they actually produced enough food for their population.

Whether someone lived, or someone died, or why or how that happened, is not the point. If survivors of the only two A-bombings in history want to get out there and protest, let 'em. It's a good reminder for everybody.
