REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Firefighters were battling a building fire Friday morning at Western Golf and Country Club in Redford Township.

The fire broke out just before 5:30 a.m. Friday. Livonia, Dearborn Heights and Southfield firefighters were called in to assist.

The fire apparently started in the kitchen of one of the clubhouse buildings. The flames were spreading from building to building.

By 8:20 a.m., firefighters had doused most of the flames and were beginning to fight back the fire.

No injuries were reported.

My point here isn't so much involving this particular tragic fire as it is the tactics the fire fighters use and the results we see. Pay some attention to the picture group at the clickondetroit link.

Looks like it was an old and perhaps poorly maintained structure.

A friend and I discussing this fire and several other fires in the past year or two in Redford involving commercial buildings where the fire fighters don't go very close to the source. They don't enter the building at all. They pump water on the roof while it burns to the ground.

So I started searching around and found this:over-last-20-years-annual-fires-in-the-us-declined-by-about-50-while-career-firefighters-increased-more-than-50 .

And in the discussion that follows on that site is perhaps an explanation for why most 911 calls are responded by EMS, fire & police, and probably why our little Easter Sunday fire down the street resulted in fire units from all the neighboring communities and airports crowding out our Easter guests.

Back to the clickondetroit pics; it looks like they watered the roof but all that was left was the old chimney.

It was a very exclusive club. Members only. Tennis, swimming, and golf. Their website offers contact once they check you out. Not even a membership price is promised until they have a look at you.

Mosst firefighters do emergency calls of all kinds.....not just fires. They are usually first on scene. Our county firefighters ran 37,486 medical calls in 2017. How many firefighters do you think that takes?

What is your point? That the fire fighters should have all put their lives on the line and entered a fully involved fire in a 100 year old wood structure? The tactics I see being used all look appropriate to the situation.

If they had a look at me? They certainly wouldn’t even give me a quote.

But I console myself by remembering what Groucho Marx infamously said: “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.”

My husband is a firefighter. An assessment is made as to the safety of entering any structure. My husband has been attacked by meth heads on more than one occasion, shot at, forced to jump out of a second story window, saved lives after OD’s, heart attacks, car accidents etc He deals with mental health patients who are often dangerous all the time. More stories over 20 years then you can imagine. He is required to be a paramedic as well as a nationally certified firefighter. He loves his job and takes it seriously and so do those that work with him. We also want him to come home at the end of the day. In many places they still have volunteer firefighters, which is a big undertaking on your time off from work.

I just wonder why it takes 5 of them to go grocery shopping while their truck idles in the parking lot?

No, I completely agree that each situation and fire must be assessed as to what the risks are. It's just a general question. The athletic club observed by Google satellite view looked like a bunch of buildings joined together resulting a common roof. Very possibly too dangerous to enter.

The other link I gave in post 3 presents an argument about how
Over last 20 years, annual fires in the US declined by about 50% while career firefighters increased more than 50%?
The author contends that public sector unions are a prime reason for that while some of the comments following point out a 70% are volunteer fire fighters.

They’re still called firefighters here too....but they’re actually EMT’s too. Hubby is retired from our country fire dept.

Because they are on duty and have to be available for a call. Couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve seen them leave a grocery cart with groceries in it because they got a call while doing their grocery shopping. And oh yeah, they pay for their own groceries too.
Hubby is a retired 34 year firefighter.
