Best Alternative to Gmail

Posted on 10/10/2018 5:48:50 PM PDT by Red in Blue PA

I am looking to shed all things Google, starting with my gmail account. I opened it in 2007 with the thought that I would have it for decades as Google was a behemoth of a company which would not disappear and which could be trusted.

But alas, I now have not an ounce of trust in Google. So much is tied to my gmail account that I want to make a move to a company which will 1) stand the test of time and 2) can be trusted.

I am quite sure I am not the only person thinking this way at this point in time. Every day something comes out about this company which makes me sick to do any business with them. Already made Bing my default search engine.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the information. Our family loves Fastmail. I do all of my secure ministry correspondence via Fastmail and have found the service excellent.

Strange thing just happened. I could not sign up for protonmail. When I clicked the "Sign Up" button it just returned me again and again to the boilerplate page with the list of topics at the bottom.

Almost as if Google and MS didn't want me to sign up.

.………..I haven’t tried to do it yet.

If I get on, I will let you know. If you do, please let me know.

Gmail IS the very definition of “The Left” ………..we know that...………...so, nothing should surprise either of us.

The word “Protonmail” is probably automatically blocked in their system.

Follow up: It seems that two days ago, when I reluctantly paid for a $ 69 subscription to Home Office Personal from MS so that I could undo their shutting off my paid-for software from years past....

It seems anyway that my Windows was kicking me into Internet Explorer by default now ! I usually use Chrome as a web surfer.

When I signed out of IE and booted up Chrome, then got on protonmail.com, it worked perfectly. I was able to sign up just fine.

Very strange though.

Amazing group of people who started protonmail.com. You gotta read some of the CVs of the leadership.

Definitely don't trust MS Yahoo or Google after all the shenanigans they have pulled in politics the past few years.

I am sure I and many other FReepers are on lots and lots of lists these guys curate about the racist redneck incorrigibles and deplorable knuckledragger conservatives that we all are by default of our genes and skin color.

You say “Tutanota is based in Russia and after a period of time will disable your email service until you provide a phone number.” /End Quote

Tutanota is based in Germany, not Russia. Have no idea where you got your information.

The site is open source (good news) and has a nice free plan including encrypted emails..

I have been using it for about a year now with no problem. Never been asked for an phone number, never been bothered by spam or excessive emails from them (other than couple talking about new features coming).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tutanota

Where are the Tutanota servers located?

The Tutanota servers are located in secure data centers in Germany. All saved data are subject to the strict German privacy protection laws. Independent of that all data is end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by the Tutao GmbH as the provider or by any third party.

The only thing Russia from Tutanota was they tried their hand at parody and tried to make a joke about Trump switching to them for their email. It sorta backfired as a joke...

Tutanota is NOT based in Russia as he said. It is based in Germany which has a good record on privacy. It is open source and for the year I have been using it, it has worked great. Simple layout, good encryption and no complaint so far about their service... I use the free version.

You are correct. I got my mail services mixed up. It is Yandex from Russia that wants a phone number.

Thanks to both of you. I don’t need anything real fancy. I’m thinking about Reaganmail.

I just googled “ProtonMail”. Do you think that just put me on Alphabet’s “watch list”? ;-)

And they’ve just just announced a ProtonVPN iOS Beta app. Thanks for posting about Proton... it’s worth a look.

You’re done, now the NSA knows. Expect them to chip your computer. Time to buy more tinfoil.

“some suggestions I got from someone who seems to know the subject:

1. cancel G mail and do not use Chrome in the meantime
2. Use “Protonmail”; owned by Swiss Company that will not compromise your email under any circumstances
3. use startpage@startpage.com

4. use “Brave” which is faster than Chrome with no advertisements”

All great suggestions. Add a VPN such as Nord, and you’re about as good as you can get.
