Why is there no right to live where you please?
The Week ^ | October 24, 2018 | Bonnie Kristian

The progression of a caravan of mostly Honduran migrants, now reportedly 7,000 strong, toward our southern border has inflamed America's perpetual immigration debate. Restrictionists quiver and fume about "invasion" and "assault," and we revisit well-worn controversies over amnesty and jobs, DACA and visas, crime and family separations and whether you should say "undocumented" or "illegal."

But there is a more fundamental question which, so far as I can tell, generally goes unexamined in our immigration conversations: Why is there no right to live where you please?

Of course, there are many practical constraints to an unfettered right to live where you please. As an extreme example: It would obviously be impossible (or at least extremely uncomfortable) if all the world's 7.6 billion people wanted to settle down in Florida....

You don’t have a RIGHT to live anywhere you select on any given day. The reason is the same as why we are not a democracy and never want to be one. No sane person wants to live under the rule of a mob.

An American citizen has the right of mobility within the country.

A non-citizen may request entry.

What’s the problem?

Send all 6 billion people to New York City. Then build a wall around it.

There is. As with all rights you still have rules you have to follow.

If I vote - I have to register.

If I want to conceal carry state reqts vary.

If I earn income I pay income tax (sigh)

If I demonstrate I need a permit (reqts vary)

ad infinitum...

Democrats import foreigners because Americans won’t vote for them.

When do I get my penthouse in New York, Bonnie?

Or my mansion on the slopes at Snowmass?

And when will Babs throw me the keys to the estate in Malibu!?

The problem is that there are so many taxpayer funded handouts, including our education system.

In a world where the government doesn’t do that, and every person isn’t just expected to do their part, but they HAVE TO do their part if they want to eat, this sort of thing isn’t much of an issue.

Would these people be coming here if they were facing a world of living off street begging and nowhere to live? I doubt it.

If I want to drive on these roads, send my kids to these schools, support these police, support these firemen, pay for these street lights, pay for this energy delivery system, etc. ... then of course I have a right to live here. I will be paying my way and not stealing from people who DO!

Also (maybe more importantly) I have enough respect for this place to call myself a citizen and get myself documented, pay taxes and OBEY THE LAWS.

why? because original Americans believe in a) inherited legacy and b) private property

and, because we’ve managed 500 years with only one really big internal war, private property and inherited legacy is strong. Interwoven in the fabric of original Americans and reinforced by our Christian culture and moral standards including tolerance. A culture built on neighborly respect that draws millions of like-minded people from around the world who crave the same freedom.

It’s a mindset that may be difficult to understand for someone who comes from a country where the average age is 30 because of a legacy of constant conflict, or a country that has socialized or communized individuality, legacy inheritance and privacy out of existence. But its a mindset that has withstood the test of time. And we won’t be surrendering it any time soon.

You need the money to pay for the apartment or house. Some countries stupidly bring aliens in and give them the money. Any country that does that is collectively the exit aperture of the big colon.
Most countries have borders and rules about who passes through and who stays. Countries that don’t are collectively an anus.
