Rep. Raskin: Must Decriminalize Pot at Federal Level as ‘Matter of Basic Justice’ in U.S.

At a Nov. 15 hearing on cannabis reform at the federal level, House Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said President Joe Biden’s pardon of people convicted of “simple possession” of marijuana under federal law was “a good first step,” and added that the next step is that “cannabis must be decriminalized at the federal level as a matter of basic justice in the country.”

Under current federal law, marijuana is classified as a Schedule 1 illegal drug, which means it has a “high potential for abuse” and is not a “currently accepted medical treatment in the U.S.,” according to Drugs.com. Other Schedule 1 drugs include Heroin, LSD, MDMA, and psilocybic mushrooms.

In his remarks before the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Nov. 15, Raskin drew a parallel between the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s and the federal prohibition against marijuana, saying that both actions produced social chaos, crime, and violence. “The war against marijuana has ruined so many lives,” said Raskin. […]

Hans von Spakovsky, a senior legal fellow with the Heritage Foundation, has warned about the dangers of comparing alcohol with marijuana. In a commentary he wrote, “Unlike marijuana, alcohol is also not a gateway drug. One of the greatest harms of marijuana legalization is increased addiction to and use of harder drugs. Prosecutors, judges, police officers and others involved in the criminal justice system know that the vast majority of defendants arrested for violent crimes test positive for illegal drugs, including marijuana. And they know marijuana is the starter drug for most criminals.” …

Same people who want people smoking pot are the ones who want to ban cigarettes. Both are bad for your health but the former makes you braindead as well and easier to control.

Die, Democrat slime.
Try some justice practiced by real lawyers who have morals and an education. Note: This excludes every leftist lawyer.

As a simple, general observation about society, I suspect most people would agree with the basic idea that mental illness is an increasingly large problem. The road rage, the Karens, the Woke, the Transgenders — in so many ways we see people with thought processes that are somewhat skewed.

Is all of it because of cannabis? Certainly not. It would be crazy to say that.
Is none of it because of cannabis? That might be a bold claim. There is at least a little evidence that in some percentage of people, cannabis contributes to the problem of mental illness.

Maybe it is foolish to have it be illegal. But it also seems foolish to have it widely used.

Regardless about how you feel about the detrimental consequences of legal weed. It is wrong to arrest and imprison people for mere possession and use of a freaking plant. Get over it. Leave people alone as long as they aren’t harming others. It’s a liberty issue.

Some States legalized weed by a vote of the people. Others, through their elected legislatures. I’m not sure how “the government” feels about the issue.

All I said is the government should leave people alone. Harmless or not, do you really believe people should do time for possessing and using a plant? Let’s not discuss the other substance, alcohol , which is responsible for more death and misery than weed ever will.
