Mannequins used to practice life-saving CPR aren't diverse enough, doctors have claimed.
Researchers want to ditch the reliance on default 'lean white male' models.
Doing so will help overcome 'bias' among bystanders and help improve the survival of other groups, they say.
This, the team claim, would be done by 'changing the perception of sudden cardiac death' — meaning people recognise it doesn't just happen to white men.
Academics from Canada and Argentina found fewer than 10 per cent of mannequins used to promote CPR on social media represented black or Asian people.
None were of pregnant women and barely any were of fat people, according to the study.
Dummies used in CPR training, often provided free by charities, can cost hundreds of pounds each.
Life-saving CPR training is used to help bystanders improve the odds of survival if someone suffers a cardiac arrest, a sudden loss of heart function.
Cardiac arrests kill thousands of people every year in Britain and the US.
There is no specific CPR guidance for black or Asian people as the techniques used are exactly the same for all adults.
Writing in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, the experts presented the findings in the

But it has a great personality.
But why is this background white????
***’lean white male’ models.***
Strange. The ones we used were the “Resusci-Anne CPR” ones.
So, these training aids are not expensive enough already?
Look into the cost of creating the molds for several types and the resulting cost increases.
Of course it’s only taxpayer money, so demand all you like.
Then complain when your taxes go up.
I’ve actually done CPR on a 600 lb. person,,,,Ain’t no fun.
I hear you.
“The solution is obvious and relatively simple> Design and build practice dummies that correlate to different racial and physical types. For example you could have dummies that represented fat black lesbians (eg: black skin with rainbow lips or something similar). No identity left behind.”
Cheaper solution, tell the class that practice dummies identify as whatever. No need to buy new ones.
Inside Hospitals....CPR is not all that successful. I work sometimes in Hosp’s. The odds are against...the patient living.
At one point in my life I was an EMT and have actually performed CPR on real people (both inside and outside of hospital). Not once did it occur to me that my training was only for “lean white males”.
Stories like this have only one purpose, to agitate and separate the races.
As someone once noted if you see racism is everything, then you are the racist.
So...What do they want? Obese, diabetic, queer, African American CPR dummies with poor English language skills?
Yes, but these types of ridiculous studies also augment the careers of academics who know that having a 'hook' to their study (e.g. race or gender disparity) will help them get published. The more sensational and hyped up a study is the more likely the journals will take it.
I was trying to be “hopeful.” Because they have other tools close at hand, they don’t have to compress as long so the odds are a little better.
But yeah…you are correct.
FFS....
Too stupid. Guessing someone should investigate whether or not the authors of this study invested in a mannequin manufacturing company recently.
Wait! It’s called a “mannequin”? That does it! I am a woman and now I am triggered and demand it be called a “personnequin.”
Clearly what we need are mannequins for the 400 pound black mama’s.
That will solve all of societies problems/s
