Kenneth, did they come from Cleland? (Power Line blog: Where did the Rather "documents" come from?)

Rather and 60 Minutes stay resolutely behind the curve. The significant part of the statement--"I no longer have...confidence in these documents"--could and should have been said on September 9. They still can't bring themselves to admit what everyone knows, that the documents are fakes.

And Rather's statement studiously avoids the only question that remains open: where did CBS get the forged documents? Specifically, did they come from the Kerry campaign? As we've noted, an email from Bill Burkett indicates that he gave materials to Max Cleland for use in the campaign. Those materials are presumably the forged documents. So Rather can't go much longer without answering the obvious question: did you get the forgeries from Max Cleland?

With all due respect, Mr. Rather, answer the questions.

I think it's breaking right now that Burkett gave the documents to Rather. FReepers unearthed this last week in a thread I saw.

Good point.

Rather's "mea culpa" is more notable for what it doesn't say.

That's not what Fox News is reporting. Fox is reporting that Burkett gave the documents to Max Cleland. Here is a link:

When the documents first surfaced they were declared co-discovered by CBS and the Boston Globe.

The Globe is loaded with lefty sleezeballs in the tank for Kerry.

Didn't they finger Burkett as the fall guy? We know it was higher up than that . . . My guess is Terry McCauliffe.

Okay. Is the known liar telling the truth or is he covering for others? Why shouldn't he be the fallguy when his name was already known.

"OK, so where did Burkett get them? "

Glenn Smith showed Burkett similar memos but wouldn't let him keep them. Burkett "reconstructed" the memos on his own computer and faxed them to the DNC and eventually CBS.

Progress towards the total destruction of danrather and skerry. danny lied while cbs stood by, all for a kerry presidency.

It may be Kerry himself. Max Cleland is starting to look more and more like the actual CBS source, and he works directly for Kerry.

an interview with Bill Burkett, the former Guard officer who provided the memos to 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY

This is on Drudge right now. It's from a memo purportedly from Andrew Heyward to CBS employees.

CBS is going to help decide this election, but not how they had hoped. Somebody is going to swing because of these forged government documents. Somebody knew who the characters in the story were but screwed up when making up the story and making it look official.

Cleland is virtually a saint among democrat circles, so Rather's refference to an "unimpeachable source" certainly implies that Cleland is on the A-list of possible sources.

Of course, I doubt Cleland himself typed these memos. Don't ask me how I know.

That's IT! Kerry typed them! Why didn't I think of that! IT all makes sense now! (or maybe Kerry's wife typed them?)

I tried to email CBS, asking why no apology to President Bush was included in their "breaking news", but can't get beyond the "contact us" link. Any ideas?
