Venezuela's Zimbabwe Road
The American Thinker ^ | Jan. 5, 2005 | A. M. Mora y Leon

The government of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez will expropriate its first farm, taking Venezuela straight down Zimbabwe road. The grab was announced this morning and will happen Saturday. The chavistas' first target is a British-owned cattle ranch. The move is a bold beginning for the chavista communists who will roll out both military and police forces for the seizure, beginning the first in a series.

The communists' mendacious rationale is that a British company, Vestey Group, did not have proper title to 3000 hectares of its 13,000-hectare cattle ranch. So they are taking it all. But the owners of the land are fighting this action and maintain that the land has a clear title and deed since 1830. Two previous governments reafirmed ownership in the 1970's after two previous expropriation attempts.

Clearly, in a land without much history of title deed, this is going to be an easy strategy for seizing land, anyone's land, in the name of 'the people.' Property rights have been officially killed off this week in Venezuela.

Chavez is a brutal leftist thug who is now beginning to do what he planned to do all along - collectivize and end all private property in the country. Just like his pal Mugabe. A very steep slide downward for Venezuela.

Standard fare sovietization. They have to appropriate the farms so they can inflict terror famines. Next come the forced labor camps. After that they can destroy the trade unions that put them in power. Ever communist regieme for that past 80 years has begun this way. Stalin was the pioneer. It's amazing nobody has ever learned from history.

It's amazing nobody has ever learned from history.

That is my leading cause of existential surprise, also.

It's more than that, though, folks are determined to deny history, if at all possible.

I believe this fact linked to the acceptance of the modern State as arbiter of all issues - the politicization of life.

Call it the Cassandra Syndrome. ;^)

Oops! I meant an anti-Cassandra Syndrome - a fatal inability to discern the future from the evidence of experience.

I believe Chavez has designs for a Union of South American Socialists.

He, Castro, Mugabe and Putin will be best buds.

Don't forget Khadaffi, Zapatero and the Ayatollahs. And slimey little 'skunk at the garden party' Daniel Ortega, waiting in the wings.

They don't want to miss out on the fun.
