FX Looks Left to Peak at OilFX Looks Left to Peak at Oil

Energy apocalypse is one big worst-case scenario

“It probably will be viewed as the worst disaster on American soil, ever.”

No, that’s not a review of the new FX Networks movie, “Oil Storm,” though it could be. Instead, it’s a comment from one of the characters in the film about the seemingly endless stream of worst-case scenarios the film ties together to create an energy cataclysm in 2005 and 2006.

The movie had its initial airing Sunday, June 5, 2005, in back-to-back broadcasts. The film was designed as a mock-umentary, looking back on the series of catastrophes that piled on top of one another.

And it was quite a list. It managed to touch on a wide variety of left-wing “apocalypse now” theories – weather, war, terrorism, China becoming the dominant economic power, that President George Bush will use martial law and the idea that oil production has peaked. “Peak oil” is one of the principle beliefs of the radical left, despite the fact that the oil industry continues to find new oil reserves and improve the ability to access hard-to-get oil and gas.

Here’s just a sampling of the catastrophes packed into two hours: A Category 4 hurricane nearly wiped out the city of New Orleans, devastating the oil facilities at Port Fourchon, 70 miles to the southwest. Then, U.S. oil was routed to Houston, where fog prevented ships from moving. Once the fog lifted, the new Bush-appointed energy czar ordered accelerated processing, which resulted in two container ships colliding and exploding. Next, the United States had to rely on Saudi Arabia for oil and terrorists struck – first killing oil workers and then destroying two key Saudi oil facilities.

I was unfortunate enough to watch this last night. I think I have even more beefs than they did, but they hit most of my biggies.

I saw it starting while I was channel-surfing last night. Glad I passed on it.

I saw most of it; I was wondering where all the threads were today! I didn't think it was too terribly bad. One of my biggest problems was the whole defense of the farm subsidies, actually. That subplot contained the implication that the Bush administration detained and held, without cause, the organizer of the protests, for a fairly long period of time. I thought that was pretty goofy.

Also, the whole line (repeated a couple of times) from the EMS worker about nobody having to die in 21st century America from cold or starvation, etc. Also, pretty goofy.

I have a feeling that leftists would say that Bush was portrayed too positively. All in all, I was mildly entertained (before realizing that I was missing Pulp Fiction!).

... and then, suddenly, without warning, all the world's beef cattle herds farted simultaneously, ending life on earth as we know it.

Saw about 20 minutes, I was so stunned I couldn't even turn it off right away. Bring back Mystery Science Theater 3000!!!
I swear Michael Moore could've made more sense with it if he'd directed it.

I watched a good chunk of this disaster of a "disaster film". Plenty of subtle Bush bashing to my ears, as well as promoting some leftist points.

Yep, in fact, now that you mention it, one action taken by the administration in the movie was to set a national speed limit at 50MPH.

I got about 27 seconds into it and when I heard "...With an oil man in the Whitehouse", I decided my time would be better spent washing and waxing my garbage cans.

If MST3K did this movie THEN I'd watch the whole thing!

BTW it's on again right now.......

But "Celebrity Boxing" is on now too. (Direct TV 250)........The one w/ Tanya Harrding Vs. Paula Jones. & Vanilla Ice Vs. Willis.

I think I'll watch the boxing....

There are plenty of untapped energy sources on this planet. For instance, there is enough methane trapped in hydrates off the Carolina coast to satisfy the US energy demands for a few hundred years. Anyone one for nukes?

We've been suffering from cheap oil - allowing any yahoo to prevent development of true, effective, alternative energy supplies by merely speculating on a potential deleterious impact on flesh eating bacteria or such, for god's sake.

I was wondering when some one was going to resurrect this Oil movie topic. I view it as a mere coincidence. Similarly when you are reading the newspaper and the character on the television says the same word you just read. Coincidence not voodoo.
