Stan is a peacemaker on death row.

 

He has been nominated 5 times for the Nobel peace prize for his work in helping to prevent gang violence.

 

He has been nominated four times for the Nobel literature prize for his children's books that warn young people about the pitfalls of joining a gang and exposes them to alternatives.

 

He maintains innocence of the crimes he was accused of, and faced racist descrimination throughout his trial. One issue highlighted the fact that the prosecutor in Tookie's original case removed three African-American jurors from the jury. During Stan's trial, this prosecutor made racially-coded remarks during his closing argument, comparing Stan during the trial to a Bengal tiger in the zoo and stating that a black community - South Central Los Angeles - was equivalent to the natural "habitat" of a Bengal Tiger.

I wonder if that letter is for real. Interesting that it seems to be written as how a stereotypical 'gang banger' would sound if you were listening to them, and it's loaded with grammar errors, but it's funny how there are no misspelled words. I just find that odd.

When our teacher at school told us to choose a role model and write a 2-page report on this person, the first person that popped into my head was you. I'm in the 9th grade going into the 10th. At my school there are a lot of kids who are badly influenced, and are in gangs. Our school has one of the worst reputations. I almost joined a gang, and if it wasn't for your movie, I would have been in it right now. I really owe you a lot. I hope that the governor of your state takes the death row away.

Tookie,
I am a 20 year old man from Iowa. The other day I sat down after I watched your movie Redemption and thought about all the things that I've done in my life and counted how many years that I should be in prison. Every day between the age of 18 and 20 I risked getting 25 to life for the things I was doing. I counted the years I should be doing for the other things I did and in 6 months time I racked up well over 300 years doing the minimum time for each crime that I committed. Only through the grace of my higher power whom I choose to call God that didn't happen. As well as no longer living a life of crime or violence I am also a recovering addict. I will have 8 months clean on June 15 -- that is 8 months without the use of any mood changing chemicals. Before I watched the movie I was making plans to start living my old life again. I wanted all the money and girls and respect (or fear) of others -- but after I watched the movie and started to do some research on you, I found that we are not all that different. I realized that I was going down that same road in a hurry. You helped me see that. The only way I can think to close this letter is to try to express my gratitude for the way you touched my life. It is with the utmost respect and gratitude that I say thank you.
