Should the US Take a More Active Role in Cross Strait Relations?

The Committee of 100 survey that I have mentioned here in the past asked the question of the American general public and American opinion leaders -

Should the US take a more active role in Cross Strait relations?

Interestingly enough, the American general public and the American Opinion Leaders were about equal, with 44% saying the US should be more active.

Just over half (52%) of the opinion leaders said, "no!", and just under half (47%) of the general public said, "no!"

The majority opinion is for the US to mind its own business.

One in ten persons in the general public said, "is there something going on over there that we should know about?"

A loud and resounding 75% said that the US should NOT defend Taiwan militarily because Americans are basically fed up with military involvement with other countries.

Fight? No way?

But should America get involved in the conflict between the mainland and Taiwan?

What do you think?

The situation with Taiwan is likely not going to escalate into military conflict; it has not escalated for 57 years, despite constantly being "on the brink." Even if the Chinese government invades Taiwan and is not militarily retaliated against, there is certain to be economic retaliation from the West-- a course of action the Chinese government will do its utmost to avoid, as it will cut off its own lifeline.
