Oil Tax Initiative Looking Up
New West Notes ^ | 07-06-2006 | Bill Bradley

** The "Clean Energy" initiative, Proposition 87, on California's November ballot is looking good. The support level for it in a private poll is over 60 percent.

The measure would enact an oil extraction tax at the wellhead to generate some $400 million a year for research and development on alternative fuels. Among the nation's big oil producing states, California is the only one without an oil tax. Voter disdain for oil companies is high.

Here we go again:

The Bad:

Price of gas rises = more money from your pocket.

Increased taxes extracted from higher priced gaoline = more money from your pockets.

More money for Schwarzenegger and the legislative Democrats to spend to launch new programs = more money from your pocket in future years.

The Good;

A currently appointed member of one of Schwarzenegger's agencies can resign and take a position as head of this new, independent, research and development body, doubling their existing salary, automatically becoming insulated from political threat or performance scrutiny and laughing all the way to the bank ... at your expense, of course.

If California voters are ignorant of the relationship between higher taxes and the price they pay at the gas pump, then if this turkey passes they have no right to complain about $4.00 a gallon gas. Economic idiots.

Fuel taxes in general are impratical for North America, because areas are spread out and it takes some people 50 miles or 80 km to get to the fuel station. California really needs to cut spending to reduce bugdet shortfalls, and it wants energy independance give tax incentives for alternative sources of energy and people will come up with them. Higher fuel taxes over time reduce driving and then reduce gas taxes collected. Therefore, for California truckers, and delivery people higher fuel tax gonna put companies out of business, and those shops and companies will have to lay people off as a result. The voters wanting fuel higher taxes conquenses mean higher prices for goods at the supermarket, fuel stations, and pizza joints, and small delivery companies go out of business with higher fuel taxes. Taxation is fine, but if used in blunt and igorant way it hurts commerce and then the comsumers.

Khosla calls himself a Republican (but contributed to Gore).

Don Fisher (father of Robert) calls himself a Republican and donates to these same VC type initiatives. Son Robert has given to Arnie's projects and is a contributor to Poizner (although he's also giving to Angelides and Jerry Brown and other dems).

John Doerr once called himself a Republican but he's fessed up and doesn't pretend anymore.

Hearst is a loyal democrat donor. And of course, Stephen Bing is rabid left.

I'm not sure about Mrs. Google-Billionaire Wendy Schmidt.

more money from your pockets

Not if you don't buy a lot of gas. Calif. leads the country in renewable energy, seem as if they want to keep it that way.

NY should play catch up and compete head to head with these guys.
