I waded into their website and their political areas and thought I was reading a DNC press release. I used to live in Houston and don't remember the paper being like this. I wonder if they're losing subscribers considering the conservatism of the area.

Part of the problem is likely the result of no other big city paper to offer competition - the Post is long gone. Just a thought. I moved from Houston in 1985.

That's the answer to your question. In order to maintain their dwindling readership, they preach to whoever is still buying into their point of view.
