According to a Wonkette operative who heard this from two different sources, Republican Senator Kit Bond is going to bail on the Hill and become Chief Lord of the University of Missouri.

Have either of you heard anything about this??
The rumor originates from the Wonkette.com website, not the most credible source around. But who knows? Maybe Bond doesn't want to be in the minority again, and he is gettting up there in years.
If it is true, I HOPE that Matt Blunt doesn't have himself appointed to the seat, which is what the source site claims.
I'm here in the belly of the beast (Columbia, MO) and have a family member
on MU faculty.
There have been whispers about John Ashcroft being considered
(and muffled screams of pain from most of our liberal university community).
I hadn't heard about Kit Bond being considered, but he'd make sense...
he's brought home a lot of bacon for MU (at least in the life sciences,
AFAIK).
But I'm sure he's unacceptable to the liberals on the faculty.
Which means about 90% of the faculty.
So will a Republican be put in his place?
I would dearly love to see John Ashcroft appointed to Bond's seat!
"So will a Republican be put in his place?"
Yes, Missouri has a Republican Governor who would choose the replacement.
well, they could always take a shot and put Talent back in.
But Ashcroft would make the dems heads explode!
Great. Thanks.
Would like Ashcroft, too.
I have huge respect for Ashcroft - his honesty on the 9-11 commission, taking it to Gorelick, etc.
I like Ashcroft, but I think that Missouri's conservative grass roots should a fresher face, someone who will be in the Senate for a long time (if reelected).
I havent heard that. But If he does, heres hoping Blunt will appoint Talent..
Somehow I just don't picture Kit Bond shmoozing with the uppity types that are in the echelons of Universities..
John Ashcroft I can picture..not Kit Bond.
I hadn't heard of this, either. However, if Bond vacates this seat, it means the GOP appointee will have to run not one, but two races in 2008 and 2010. I'd rather he simply stay put and retire at the end of his term in 2010.
If he chooses to leave, one interesting name that Blunt might appoint would be State Treasurer Sarah Steelman. Steelman is considered Blunt's strongest primary opponent in '08 (Blunt does not, alas, enjoy very strong approval ratings).
Is this true?
If Bond retires either now or 2010, I think Jo Ann Emerson would be ideal. The RAT opponent is going to be one of the Carnahan children.
You mean the Carnahan demon spawn.
As long as I live I will never forget the vicious abuse Ashcroft took from his fellow senators on the left......during his confirmation hearings for Attorney General.
