Immigration voting record = F
In 1996, removed higher fines for businesses which hire illegal aliens
Sen. Thompson, in committee consideration of S.1664 protected businesses from having to pay higher fines when they are caught hiring illegal aliens. Under the idea that current fines were not enough of a deterrent against businesses cutting their labor costs by hiring illegal aliens, the Senate immigration subcommittee approved higher fines.
Various study commissions have found that the willingness of U.S. businesses to hire illegal aliens is the No. 1 incentive for foreign workers to become illegal aliens here. But Sen. Thompson voted with a 10-8 majority in the Judiciary Committee to remove the higher fines from the 1996 legislation against illegal immigration.
If true it would do serious damage to his chances.
“Immigration voting record = F”
Not good.
Almost as bad as Bush’s inaction on immigration...
Fred Thompson lacks the fire in his belly necessary to be President. If handed to him, he might do it. His thymotic needs can be easily solved by taking over the Paul Harvey radio slot.
I just don’t think he is going to run.
Glorius Ronald Maximus is the one to open the door to amnesty
Afronaut, what planet are you on??? He got A+s on enforcing immigration laws, and a C overall.
If you think he’s weak on immigration, you are free to point out is numerous bad votes. But saying he got an “F” when he got a C is beyond the pale.
I’ve got no axe to grind in this but I can sure tell the difference between an “F” rating and a “C” rating when I read it.
What’s with the misrepresentation?
I think it would be a good idea if you asked the admin mod to change the misrepresentation of the grade given Thompson in your first posts.
In my profile you’ll find this is an important issue to me, and many conservatives have ranging views on how to solve it. I for one think as long as you start enforcing our given laws, and proving their causing wide spread change....
Then I’m more than willing to look at options in immigration policy changes. I like Fred, but I don’t necessarily like his past opinions on everything (as far as immigration goes). Something in between Duncan and Fred would probably be my ideal, but I would likely support Fred....I just think he has a credible chance. And I trust him to a point, because the way he speak of Mexico and the illegal immigration...is really honest.
Mexico’s got to change...latin america’s got change. If Rudy was a C on this issue, I’d actually consider lending him more support....but he isn’t. I like most of our candiates for different reasons.
