Dear Editor, I wanted to write to express my displeasure with the last issue that featured the 2008 presidential hopefuls and somehow managed to overlook republican front runner Rudi Giuliani. It is a shame that a student paper, on a university campus, could make such a blunder. Blunders of this sort show just why the federal government wants to require college students to take a civics course. Though featuring candidates and the coming election of 2008 is great, it should be done by someone with some sort of political knowledge that is also in touch with society to insure that something of this nature does not take place.
That said I would like to submit what should have been said about Americas Mayor Rudi Giuliani. Giuliani was elected mayor of New York City in 1993 and served in that position for 8 years focusing on reducing crime, reforming welfare and improving the quality of life. A statement on joinrudy2008 shows that [u]nder Mayor Giulianis leadership, overall crime was cut by 56%, murder was cut by 66%, and New York Cityonce considered the crime capital of the countrybecame the safest large city in America according to the FBI. Mayor Giuliani also took decisive steps to restore fiscal responsibility to New York City, reducing or eliminating 23 city taxes while turning an inherited $2.3 billion budget deficit into a multi-billion dollar surplus. During his time as Mayor, Giuliani also had to face the tragic attacks of 9-11-01. Giuliani immediately took charge in the recovery effort and his actions got him honored by former first lady Nancy Reagan who presented Mayor Giuliani with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Freedom Award, he was knighted by the Queen of England, and named Person of the Year by Time magazine. Giuliani is running for president on the platform of his 12 commitments to the American people which are:
I will keep America on offense in the Terrorists War on Us. I will end illegal immigration, secure our borders, and identify every non-citizen in our nation. I will restore fiscal discipline and cut wasteful Washington spending. I will cut taxes and reform the tax code. I will impose accountability on Washington. I will lead America towards energy independence. I will give Americans more control over and access to health care with affordable and portable free-market solutions. I will increase adoptions, decrease abortions, and protect the quality of life for our children. I will reform the legal system and appoint strict constructionist judges. I will ensure that every community in America is prepared for terrorist attacks and natural disasters. I will provide access to a quality education to every child in America by giving real school choice to parents. I will expand Americas involvement in the global economy and strengthen our reputation around the world.
