An Account of Thompson's 'Desire' Question, From The Man Who Asked

Remember the guy who asked Fred Thompson, at a campaign stop, if he really wanted to be President?
He contacted Jim Geraghty with his opinion of the answer and, it seems, he was pretty darned happy with it. Here’s an excerpt:
It was a great answer. At points during the answer I was ashamed I had asked the question. I knew the answer. Do I really want to support a candidate who lives to be President? Is that type of candidate really interested in serving the nation or serving his own self-interest? Sen. Thompson positioned himself as willing to serve, not for an enlarged ego, but out of a deep desire to serve his nation. He has a desire to make our nation better for his children and grandchildren. Far from a slick Branson like presentation, he presented himself as a dedicated patriot willing to serve if we, the American people, were willing to have him do so. He refuses to be a President under false pretenses. He is not leading us into a shotgun relationship. He understands that under the founder’s concept of the social contract, both parties must be fully aware of the terms of the contract when entering into the agreement. If the American people do not want him to be President, he is not going to trick us into agreeing to him. As I said, the answer was refreshing. It was a great answer.
That is, I have to say again, the exact opposite of what the MSM reported. I keep wondering how hard it is to actually be a journalist these days. It seems that they don’t have to pay much attention to whatever they’re covering and can pretty much write anything they like without worrying about losing their jobs.
Yes.
I don’t want a candidate who lives and breathes to be President.
I want a candidate who wants to serve the country so badly that they will do what it takes to convince a majority of the people to vote for him.
Because if he won’t do that, there’s no point in running,
“Do what it takes” sounds like “sell out.”
“Do what it takes” can mean almost anything to anybody, and has both positive and negative connotations.
The key is that if you don’t convince a majority of the voters to support you, you won’t win the election.
It’s hard work convincing people that you are the person they should vote for, and you have to be able and willing to do that hard work. You don’t have to like it, but you do have to do it.

Yet another attribute of Fred’s that makes me proud to support him.
Damn shame, though, that politicians such as he are few and far between.

That was an extremely helpful piece. It went viral and did Fred a lot of good in the blogosphere, which might translate into something positive from the MSM someplace...maybe...we can hope anyway. ;)
I’m so proud to be a FredHead! I’m so proud of our candidate. FRED is so refreshing. I have heard his “Message to Iowa” about three times now, and each time I hear something new.

I would like to hear each candidate asked (by surprised) “Would you rather have the White House occupied by yourself, or someone you deemed better”? I suspect Fred Thompson would prefer the latter, and would not be afraid to say so. Would anyone else?

As I was going around the blogosphere today, I was struck by the number of people who said 17 minutes was too long. How sad is that, that listening to a presidential candidate for 17 minutes was too long? Tells you much about the American we live in.

"We decided that we would come out here and wish these veterans a happy new year and thank them for the service to their country," Thompson said.
