Today’s Americans are not schooled in the proper respect of and treatment for the flag. This was not the case right after WWII. We were taught from the first day of school how to handle a flag and especially that it should never be allowed to touch the floor or ground. It was a big thing in our lives. Not so today. My granddaughter’s elementary school had a program last year where they sang a patriotic song about being an American. For the song each child waved a small American flag. Between that song and the next song they simply leaned down and placed the flags on the floor at their feet! I was really taken aback. I found the act to be very disrespectful. I know they meant no disrespect and am confident they would never do anything knowingly to show disrespect to the flag or America.

It’s just another example of how life has changed in America over the last 60 or so years. I have no doubt that in 60 years when these children attend attend program put on by their grandchildren and be appalled at something they do or say or sing that will raise few eyebrows in that day.

I am equally appalled when I see people wearing the flag as clothing. There was a time when that was against the code.

I'm not exactly sure what this means. I have a couple of patriotic shirts. Is any shirt with the colors red, white and blue a "flag" how about if it has stars? Stripes? When does it become a "flag"?

The flag should NEVER touch the ground!

Anyone who sees someone deliberately mistreating a flag should call them on it.

If it’s accidental the mishap should be brought to their attention.

To many people have died fighting for what that flag represents — I won’t see it disrespected.

People don’t have to know a lot of elaborate codes of conduct, but the flag shouldn’t be treated as if it’s just a piece of cloth.

Most of what you see now is people with the flag on the car. Whether an actual “flag” banner, or a sticker/magnet, the flag is meant to be toward the front of the car, never the back.

I hate to say it, but I really hate our erstwhile local FD which had a truck with a full-size US flag mounted on the very back of 1 of the big trucks, flapping around like crazy when driven. Hitting dirty equipment on the truck, catching plenty of emissions, and perilously close to breaking the “pole” when at speed.

Also saw a Joe Schmoe around here with the same thing with his regular P/U truck.

I know they mean well, but it’s a “pet peeve” of mine - big time! LOL
